Vikings adjusting to Muse's style BY SAM DAVIS Hit CHRONICLE North Forsyth played at the pace it wanted tor most of its experience in the Frank Spencer Classic last week at Lawrence Joel Coliseum. A nd the end result was pleasing to coach Mike Muse". The Vikings dropped a close loss to Parkland in the opening round of the tour nament. but they rebounded the following day to defeat Glenn. 48-44, in the consolation round. In both games North stuck to the game plan developed by Muse and never let the opponent dictate tempo. Consequently, the Vikings were able to take advan tage of their opponent's frustra tions and add confidence in their first year under their new coach. "We're getting there," Muse said. "We're not where we want to be. but thank God we're not where we used to be." Like most of their games this season, in which the Vikings have posted a 3-6 record. North went through a period when it appeared that they might fall apart. In this particular game it came after the Vikings used a third quarter run to increase their lead to 39-28 heading into the fourth quarter. Glenn rallied with a 10-2 run to close the gap to 41-39 with 5:22 remaining. The game turned into a chess match from that point with the two teams trading counter moves in the final minute. Neither team was espe cially adept offensively. However, North came through with several big plays to notch the victory. Perhaps the biggest was supplied by sophomore point guard Stephano Jackson. Jackson, who finished with 15 points, knocked down two free throws with eight seconds remaining to give his team a 46 44 lead. And although he missed the front end of a one-and-one with five seconds to play, Jackson put the game away with only one second left when he drilled two free throws. "Stephano did an excellent job at the end of the game," Muse said. "We've put a lot of time into our free throw shooting in practice and today it paid off for us. "I was happy with the way Stephano played," Muse added. "He had been struggling a little earlier, but he came through for us when we needed him." So did Mike Drum, the Vikings' 6-4 pivotman, who led all scorers with 20 points. "Mike Drum has really stepped up his level of play," Muse said. "He's been playing well and playing hard." North Forsyth took a 13-8 lead at the end of the first quar ter and stretched it to 24-18 at the half. The Vikings then grabbed their biggest lead of the game at the end of the third quarter, 39-28. But the Bobcats came roaring back in the fourth quarter and had several opportunities to take the lead in the final minutes. However, they botched two opportunities as North's defense forced errant throws on two pos sessions with less than eight sec onds left to play. "I'm disappointed that we didn't finish," Muse said. "We were getting good looks, but we didn't make our shots. But our defense came through for us and I'm pleased with that. This was a big step for us. Looking back, we've had trouble holding on in close games. Today we won one so we hope to build from it. It's a lot better leaving this tourna ment 1-1 rather than 0-2." Scott from page B1 ond half, connecting on seven of 10 field goals and three of four free throws. But it was Scott who ignited the crowd with his power ful dunks and an attempted 360 degree dunk that ended up being a layup after Scott's foot slipped. "I was feeling good tonight," Scott said. "We knew Navy was going to come out and press us so that was good because it gave us a chance to get into our run ning game." Scott said he and his teammates never know who's going to provide the scoring but each player comes ready to do his part." "That's the good thing about this team," he said. "We have some guys who like to work together, and this was just a team effort." Scott did most of his damage midway through the second half when the Deacons blew open the game with an 18-6 run that saw the margin grow from 47-36 to 65-42. Scott scored seven of the points during the four-minute run, exciting the crowd with sev eral explosive moves, including an alley-oop dunk and a 360 degree layup. .ir-- ?" "I was looking for an oppor tunity to try it in a game," Scott said. "That was my thinking the whole time, but as soon as I got the ball my foot slipped, but I stayed focused and just took off and layed it in." Scott's 12 rebounds were a career-high. He had seven on defense and five on offense. "Coach has really been telling me to get the offensive glass," he said. "That was something 1 was trying to focus on doing. C. E.
