Mary Smith pre sented a poem in honor of Johnson titled "Ain't I a Woman of God." Mack praised God for Johnsons "beautiful spirit, warm spirit. She is a dressing woman. If 1 am not sure if my tie matches my suit, I ask Sis ter Johnson. She and her husband have contributed much at Union Baptist Church. Because of her faithfulness, so many have come out tonight." Alderman Vivian Burke present ed Johnson with a resolution from Mayor Jack Cavanagh. Burke expressed how blessed the city of Winston-Salem is to have such a fine citizen as Johnson. "You all have worked with her, been in church with her, been in the neighborhood with her." Burke said. "How we appreciate citizens like you." "The evening was filled with music. Sandra K. Lawson rendered melodious versions of "The Lord's Prayer" and "What a Difference You've Made in My Life." The Rev. Kevin Gibson sang the Negro spiri tual "Ride on. King Jesus." and Wendy Majors. Johnson's great niece, sang a medley of spirituals The medley included "Steal Away"; "I Got a Mother in the Kingdom"; "Lord, I Want to Be a Christian"; and "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord." Her nephew Gordon Clay Slade received a standing ovation when he sang "Only What You Do for Christ Will Last." EnergyUnited Foundation reaches those in need SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE STATESVILLE - As the year 2000 drew to a close, the EnergyU nited Foundation reached a total of $765,715 given to families, individ uals and nonprofit organizations since the foundation began in 1996. The charitable-giving program supported by co-op members' vol untary donations gave $25,161 to help families and individuals in urgent need of assistance in December. This was the largest amount granted in a single month in the year 2000. The grants went to a total of 20 persons and families facing unex pected and severe needs. A total of $9,828 was awarded to eight fami lies to pay for delinquent electric bills and mortgage payments. An additional $10,298 went to seven other individuals and families for rent or mortgage payments and related expenses. In other cases, the foundation gave $300 to an individual to help repair the sewer line at her home; $2,500 to a disabled woman to repair her van; $1,037 for necessary home repairs; $298 for a past-due fufcl oil bill; and $900 to purchase a space heater. In almost every case, the individuals assisted were elder ly or unable to work due to a dis ability. More than 35,000 EnergyUnit ed customers donate funds to the foundation by allowing the cooper ative to "round up" their monthly electric bills to the next highest dol lar amount. The average donation is 50 cents a month for each partic ipating customer. The donations are placed ip a special fund, which is administered by an independent volunteer board, the EnergyUnited Foundation board of directors. Grants from the foundation are made to individuals and families living in the general EnergyUnited 19-county service area. One does not have to be a customer of Ener gyUnited to be eligible for assis tance from the foundation. The grants are based entirely on need and are given to individuals and families who are suffering unusual or unexpected problems and are in grave need of assistance. Grants may be used for shelter, clothing, food, health care, emergencies and other humane needs. Applications for assistance may be obtained from any EnergyUnited office.
