I 4 Hot teams roll into the last month ? i Lut Williams Photo STEVE JOYNER: J. C. Smith head coach pleads with official during his team's loss Saturday to Winston-Salem State. LUT WILLIAMS BCSP Editor The twists and turns of the 2000-2001 season are coming to a head as teams enter the last month of the regular season in black college basketball. In just about every conference, in both men and women's races, preseason favorites have given way to hot teams. It means there should be plenty of excitement as teams jock ey for position headed down the stretch to conference tournaments. MEAC Both the Hampton men and women were picked as the teams to beat going into the sgason. Instead, both are struggling to stay above water. The defending champion Lady Pirates (5-5 MEAC. 7-11) have fallen into the mid dle of the pack in the women's race which is now paced by the surprise Lady Bulldogs of S. C.State (9-1. 13-4). Head coach Keisha Campbell's Bulldogs, picked to finish 10th (next to last) by coaches in the preseason, defeated Hampton. Norfolk State and Howard in successive games over the last week, the lat ter a 107-104 overtime win that knocked the Lady Bison from the unbeaten ranks in con ference play. The talented Hampton men (7-3 , MEAC, 13-5) have also struggled, losing two games of a recent road trip to fall into third place in the conference. The hot team is N. C. A&T (6-2 MEAC, 9-8). The Aggies, led by second-year coach Curtis Hunter, were picked to finish fourth in the conference but enter Thursday's I March 1) matchup at confer ence leader S. C. State (8-1 MEAC, 11-9) in position to tie for the top spot. A&T knocked off another surprise team. Howard (5-4 MEAC, 7-11), Monday just two days after the Bison defeated S. C. State. SWAC Like Hampton in the MEAC. the Alcorn State men (7-2 SWAC, 7-11) and women (7-2 SWAC, 10-9) were picked to rule the SWAC. But they've run into stiff competition from both programs at Alabama State. Freda Jackson's Alabama State Lady Hornets (8-1 SWAC, 14-4) have run off four straight wins, including a 58-55 win over the Lady Braves of Alcorn, to take over the top spot. Rob Spivery's men (8-1 SWAC, 12-6) also have a four-game win streak including a 64-52 win over Alcorn State. The men have a rematch on Mon., Feb. 5 with Mississippi Valley State (6-3 SWAC. 8-7), the only team to beat them in conference play. SIAC Morehouse (8-2 SIAC, 13-5), under new coach Grady Brewer is out front in the men's SIAC race. Darius Wade's 21.3 points per game leads the Maroon Tigers. New head man Winston Bennett has Kentucky State (6-4 SIAC, 9-9) in a tie for second. Preseason pick Clark Atlanta is fourth at 4-3. 9-8. The Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State (9-1 SIAC. 14-4) are one of the few pre) season favorites performing up to expectations. They holif a half-game lead over surprisf ing Tuskegee (8-1 SIAC, 13) 5). CIAA The GIAA race look i turn this week when Johnsoii C. Smith (4-1 C1AA W. 14-3)1 the conference's only nationally ranked men's learn, fell to defending cham) pion Winston-Salem State (2-2 CIAA W, 16-3) in a key Western Division game. ?) Head coach Dave Kobbins' perennial E. Div. favorite Virginia Union (4-0 CIAA E. 11-6) seems to have righted their shifl since getting better inside play from CIAA shot-block leader Hugh Taylor, the cousii) of former Panther and current Detroit Pistol) Ben Wallace, and 6-8 transfer (Lander) Na'im Fogle. who sat out the first semester) On the women's side, defending tour{ nament champion Livingstone (2-3 CIAA W. 13-4) has struggled while head coach Jol| Robinson's Lady Eagles of N. C. Central (4-0 CIAA W. 15-2) have prospered) Surprising Va. State (3-1 CIAA E, 9-7) an<J St. Paul's (3-1 CIAA E, 11-5) lead the Easj over favorite Bowie State (2-2, 7-12. Praine View 7:30 PM The XFL's got next J Just when you think you've seen the last of pro football for "a while, you haven't. Or TOaybe you have. Though the NFL has their annual all-star game (the 2001 Pro Bowl) left on their sched ule this Sunday, there's another whole season of football on tap. the XFL. This is the league, created by World Wrestling Federation founder Vince McMahon who brought NBC and a couple of other networks along so that the novel league would begin their first season with TV expo sure. Beginning Saturday (Feb. 3) in prime time (8:00 pm on NBC), the New York/New Jersey Hitmen will tangle with the Las Vegas Outlaws to kick off the eight-team league's play on their 10-game schedule. But this is not just football as we know it. McMahon and his cohorts have added some new wrinkles, and brought back some old ones that they hope will be entertaining. They are things like: - No fair catches on punts, though punt returners are given a five-yard "halo" for their protection. - Any punt travelling over 25 yards is a live ball and-can be recovered by either team. - No point-after-touchdown (PAT) kicks. After touchdowns, teams will have to run or pass for one point. Fumbles or interceptions can be returned by the other team for a point. - Receivers or defenders will need only one foot in bounds on a reception or intercep tion. - Defenders can play "bump-and-run defense all over the field. - Any number of players will be 'miked' as well as some coaches and fans. Players on the rosters of the XFL teams are pri marily a mixture of NFL veterans and castoffs. Black colleges have representation pn. each of the teams. Here is the list of players-from black colleges. CHICAGO ENFORCERS 29 Quincy Coleman DB Jackson St. i 55 Antron Wright LB Beth.-C'kman J 67 Bennie Anderson OG Tenn.
