On Friday, May 4, out of their
concern about the pervasiveness of
racism. Christian women in Win
ston-Salem will gather to worship,
pray and call for an end to racism as
part of the annual observance of
May Friendship Day. Church
Women United has a long history of
working to bring about justice for all
persons Nearly 50 years after the
Civil Rights Movement, racism
remains a pervasive moral issue in
American society. Church Women
United sponsors this ecumenical
worship service.
Lois Dauway, who works with
the women's division of the global
ministries board of the United
Methodist church, wrote this ser
vice. In her position, she works for
women's concerns, family advocacy
program, racial justice and public
policy. She was recently elected to
the central committee of the World
Council of Churches. In the past,
Dauway, a lay woman, was the asso
ciate for inclusiveness and justice for
the National Council of Churches

addition of two sons of the

men of God are in preparation)

istry.
Minister G.L. Brown will
preach his affirmation sermon on
Friday, May 4. at 7 p.m. at Grace.
The affirmation service is a stan
dard procedure of Grace United
Community Church for ministers
who are joining the church and
who have already been licensed
and/or ordained.
Brown is a former member of
Calvary Baptist Church of Win
ston-Salem. where he was
ordained under the pastorate of
Dr. Mark Corts. He received his
undergraduate degree in religion
and psychology from Gardner
Webb College and has studied at
Wake Forest University and
Southwestern Baptist Theologi
cal Seminary. He received his
early religious nurturing at Crest
wood Baptist Church and has
served as an assistant pastor and
associate pastor at congregations
in Winter Park, Fla., and Sanlan
do, Fla. He

leadership of the Home Mission
and Foreign Mission Evangelism
Team, which will include work
ing with Grace's plant church in
Mbotho. South Africa.
Dr. Joseph B. Parks, the pas
tor of Grace Church, said. "We
are taking our salvation seriously
and our Christianity to a new
level, and the addition of Minis
ter Brown will only increase our
efforts to our commitment of
sharing the Good News."

27, Brother Charles Edward
Goodman preached his initial
sermon in preparation for his
licensure in the ministry. Good
man is a current student at Wake
Forest University and has plans
to further his education in law
and ministry. Following his ser
mon. Pastor Parks conducted the
licensure service, which will
enable Goodman to perfect his
spiritual calling and perform the
duties of a licensed minister. The
license will be renewed annually
until such time as ministerial
ordination is achieved.

abuse recovery program. This
spring. Prodigals Community
will honor one man for complet
ing the program and recognize
several current residents for out

of Prodigals community, will

Prodigals Community offers
the highly-structured job train
ing and personal responsibility
New Salem program to men and
women with histories of chronic
substance abuse relapse. Resi
dents follow a 78-hour schedule
of planned activities per week
including job-training, computer
and GED classes; voluntary wor
ship services; therapy groups;
household chores and recreation
al and cultural activities. Mini
mum commitment for program
completion is 15 months.

percent of their program costs
through their full-time participa
tion in Prodigals Property Ser
