Obituaries Russell Funeral Home 822 Carl Russell Ave. 722-3459 DAVIS Mrs. Pearl Alsbrooks Davis, 2721 N. Glenn Ave.. Winston Salem, died June 8 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Cen ter. She was born on Jan. 28, 1911, in Monroe. Union County. N.C., to Annie Elizabeth Alsbrooks and A.D. Johnson. She moved to Winston-Salem and later made her home in Bethania, where she married George Washington. To this union one son was born. James Leon Washington. Years later he passed away. Later she was married to the late Nero Davis. Mrs. Davis was a faithful member of Phillips Chapel Baptist Church and was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. She was a member of Elizabeth Chapter 310 Order of Free Masons. Scottish Rites. She is survived by: one son. James Leon Washington (Anne); two granddaughters. Pearl Elizabeth and Kenya Regina Washington; one great-granddaughter, Landis Brown of Roswell, Ga.; a very spe cial cousin, Eugene Hall (Ginny) of Monroe, N.C.; other cousins, nieces, nephews of Monroe; a dear niece. Willena Alsbrooks; special care givers, Helen Winbush, Margaret Speight; her sisters-in-law, Julia Lash of Bethania, Fannie Davis of Winston-Salem, Alice Davis and a brother-in-law, Eddie Davis, both of Columbus. Ohio; a devoted extended family member, Betty C. Williams of Winston Salem; other relatives and friends. The funeral was held June 15 at 1:30 p.m. at Phillips Chapel Bap tist Church. Rev. HILLIARD Retired Staff Sergeant Sylvester Hilliard of 5895 Styers Ferry Road, Clemmons, formerly of 1208 N. Cameron Ave.. Winston Salem, died June 10 at Forsyth Medical Center after an extended ill ness. He was born in Daytona Beach, Fla., to the late Norah and Eliza Wynn Hilliard. Mr. Hilliard retired as an administrative assistant after 26 years of active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps. Before becoming a member of United Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, Mr. Hilliard was a longtime member of St. James AME Church and Shiloh Baptist Church, where he was honored as a Leader of Men, 1989-90. At Shiloh Baptist Church and United Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, Mr. Hilliard was a Sunday school teacher and served with the Deacon's Ministry and Trustee Ministry. He was a member of Salem Lodge 139, a life member of Ameri can Legion Post 220 and Disabled American Veterans, and a mem ber of Winston Lake Retired Men's Club and the Prince Feather Garden Club. Scales of Flint, Mich.; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; longtime, special, devoted and dedicated friends, Charles and Madge Haynes of Raleigh. The funeral was held June 18 at noon at United Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Dr. J. Ray Butler officiated. Burial followed at Salisbury National Cemetery with full military honors. Russell Funeral Home directors were in charge of the arrangements. KILOORB Mr. Orlando Eugene Kilgore, known as "Booga" and "The Pro fessor," of Greenville, S.C., died June 10 unexpectedly. He was born on June 21, 1969, in New Castle, Pa., a graduate of Parkland High School and Forsyth Technical Community College. Hews employed by National Health Care and a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, both in Greenville, S.C. He was a loving, caring and compassionate person. He was preceded in death by his grandmother. Ruth Hawkins, and great-grandmother, Eloise K. Goldsmith. He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving parents, Lana Kilgo re Taylor (William) of Winston-Salem; his father. James Bell (Kathy) of California; his grandfather, Marion McDaniel of Greenville, S.C., and grandmother, Nessie Bell of New Castle. Pa.; two brothers. Parish Kilgore of Winston-Salem and Richard Bell of California; three sisters, Kimberly Kilgore, Kajuana and Kameka Talley, all of Winston-Salem; one stepbrother, William Fant of Anderson. I BENNETT Mrs. Catherine Julia Bailey Bennett of 1704 E. Kivette Drive. High Point, passed June 8 at High Point Regional Hospital. She was born on May 23. 1933, to the late Oshia Wilson and Lonnie B. Bai ley. She was 68 years and 17 days of age. She was a former employee of Styrex Industries and Rich Face Vereer of High Point. She graduated from William Penn High School. A fervent believer in God her entire life, she was a member of Shield of Faith Ministries. She was an avid lover of the organ and piano, and enlightened and blessed many with her God-given gift; she played at many churches. Surviving are husband Bishop Franklin C. Bennett of St. Peters burg. Fla.; her son. Michael A. Bennett, and his wife, Teresa, of High Point; two grandchildren. DeDerreck G. Bennett and Mi'Khael D. Bennett of High Point; nieces and nephews, Natalie, Reginald, Frederick and Donna Bailey; her care giver and best friend, Anna Lane of the home. She also had a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Her home-going service was held June 14 at 3:30 p.m. at Shield of Faith Ministries, 1201 E. Green Street. High Point. Rev. James P Jones officiated. Arrangements were entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Services of High Point. COBB On June 8, Mrs. Mildred Barnette Cobb passed away while departing from her brother's funeral. She was born in Greensboro, on Nov. 4, 1918, and raised in High Point, where she devoted her life to raising her five children with her husband of 65 years, Marion Cobb Sr. Not only did Mrs. Cobb ( introduce her children to a Christian lifestyle under the leadership < of St. Stephen AME Zion Church in High Point, she also invested her love as an employee of High Point School District. Her family fondly looks upon her example of community leader ship. which was manifested in her volunteer service as a worker in the Missionary/Life Members Council, the Burns Hill Community Club and as a church deaconess and usher. Mrs. Cobb is survived by her loving husband and her five chil dren, Marion (Helen) Cobb Jr., Terry Lee (Ernestine) Cobb Sr., Ronald (Isabelle) Cobb, Patricia (Ervin) Cobb Davis and Garfield Cobb; and eight grandchildren. Also, Mrs. Cobb had the privilege and joy of raising Mrs. Angela (Lorenzo) Cobb Smith, whom she loved with all her heart and all her soul. Although Mrs. Cobb will be greatly missed, her loved ones look forward to the day when they will be reunited with her for all eter nity. The funeral was held June 15 at St. Stephens AME Zion Church. Rev. Mary Kendall officiated. Burial followed in the Carolina Bibli cal Gardens. Arrangements were entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Ser vices of High Point. NCLSON Mr. James Nelson of Los Angeles. Calif., known to many friends as "Word Up," was born on July 4. 1957, to the late Ruth Lee Chan dler Nelson and Joseph Louis Nelson, who was born in Kings Street. S.C. Mr. Nelson attended Forsyth County Public Schools, served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Hawaii for many years. His hobby was poetry writing. He leaves to cherish his memories one brother. Former Atkins teacher, Marguerite Brower Richardson Thornton, dies Marguerite Brower Richard son Thornton, known as "Rete," of Philadelphia, Pa., departed this life on June 9. Mrs. Thornton was born in Asheboro on May 12, 1920, the eldest child of Rev. and ? ,_} Mrs. J.E. ?* Brower. Mrs. Thornton received her early educa tion from the V '' Asheboro Thornton City Schools and received a B.S. degree from West Virginia State College Insti tute; an M.S. degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; and an M.A. degree from Temple University. Philadel phia. She was also a graduate of the Pioneer Business School and Mitranna School of Modeling. Mrs. Thornton taught at Atkins High School in Winston Salem (1942-'45) and was a fifth and sixth-grade teacher at the Gideon and Kinderton schools in the Philadelphia Public Schools. She served the schools in many capacities and retired in 1983 after 43 years of faithful service. An ardent church worker. Mrs. Thornton served in many capaci ties at Tioga United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Church Conference. She also served as president of the Wes leyan Service Guild, secretary of the Commission on Worship, and a member of the church Adminis trative Board, Council on Min istries and Policy Commission. Within her community, she continued to contribute to the lives of many. She held the titles of first corporate president and national historian for TWIGS Inc.. was honored as a Life Mem ber of Alpha Kappa Alpha Soror ity Inc. in 1977 and became a Golden Soror in 1999 (a 51-year membership). She was also a Life Member of the NAACP. NEA and the Mannequins Modeling Guild. Other citations include: Four Chaplains Legion of Honor mem bership, volunteer teacher of Christian education at the Youth Study Center. Tutorial Progress volunteer at Zion Baptist and Tioga Methodist Church. Junior Red Cross of the Southern Penn Chapter of the American Red Cross. The National Association of Fashion and Accessory Designers Inc. honored her as one of the "10 Best Dressed Women in Philadel phia" while representing Alpha Kappa Alpha in 1967. She was a loyal and dedicated member of the Prince Hall Masonic Family on the local and grand and international levels in Pennsylvania. She worked in vari ous capacities in the following Prince Hall families: honorary past commandress. Pyramid Court 17. Daughters of Isis: hon orary past imperial commandress. Heroines of Jericho; past wor thy matron. King Solomon Chap ter 60, Order of Eastern Star. Mrs. Thornton, in spite of her busy schedule, always had time to work with others. No task was too great. She encouraged others to strive for excellence. Her life was a living example. She loved chil dren. and encouraged them to aspire to greatness. She traveled extensively throughout the 50 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Caribbean. Canada, Mexico. Australia. Rome and other continents. Her parents and her husband. James Melvin, preceded Mrs. Thornton in death. She leaves to cherish her memory: two sons. Edwin (Rona) Richardson Jr., I q Emmons T. Richardson] one daughter.
