RJR officials announced last
week that the 2001 Vantage Cham
pionship is the last Vantage Cham
pionship. RJR has been soliciting a
new and/or joint sponsor for the
tournament for years. This is
another corporate business deci
sion that is neither right nor wrong.
The tournament began in 1987
with the highest total purse on the
Senior PGA Tour. Since the tour
nament's inception, more than S4.5
million has been distributed to
local charities associated with the
? event. The Vantage was a great
venue for Winston-Salem and
the Triad. It has been estimat
ed that the tournament gener
ated $8 million in revenue for
local and area businesses year
ly, and more than 2,000
overnight guests as a result of
yhe event.
This writer understands
that there is a movement to
obtain a new local sponsor and
keep the tournament here.
However, time is everything.
The Senior PGA Tour will very
soon be announcing its 2002
tournament schedule. Rest
assured the senior circuit is not
wasting any time selling the
2002 dates to another sponsor
in any area of the country.
The Coca-Cola Clinic at
Holtgrieve
Ziegler
Hall
Morgan
The Lake is still on for Tuesday,
Sept. II. at 4:30 p.m. at Winston
Lake Golf Course. Senior PGA
Tour professionals Walter Hall, Jim
Holtgrieve. Walter Morgan and
Larry Ziegler will conduct the clin
ic. The Winston Lake Senior Golf
Association will host and coordi
nate the everft. Hot dogs, chips and
plenty of Coca-Cola products will
be served to all attendees at the
event. Also a free ticket to the Van
tage Championship, to be played at
Tanglewood Park Sept. 14-16. will
be given to all in attendance.
Walter Hall was born in Win
ston-Salem and still lives in Clem
mom during the oll'-season. Hall
began playing golf as a youngster
at Hillcrest Golf Course. He also
played on the golf team at
Reynolds High School. Hall did
not play on the PGA Tour, but
turned professional in 1994 and
joined the Senior PGA Tour in
1997. In 1999. Hall won the Belfry
PGA Seniors Championship on
the PGA European Seniors Tour
and finished eighth at the Senior
British Open. T his year he has eight
top-10 finishes, the best being tied
for second in the Las Vegas Senior
and Classic and tied for third at the
Farmers Charity Classic. Hall has
placed more than S8(K).(KK) in his
pocket thus far this year in win
nings on the senior 4(>ur. Hall has
probably prayed every golf course
in our area, including those infa
mous gangsomes at Winston Lake
Golf Course. He has thoroughly
enjoyed his return to play profes
sionaJly in his hometown, and
looks forward to being a pari of the
Coca-Cola Clinic at The Lake. It
gives him an opportunity to renew
old friendships and give something
back to the community where he
has lived and worked all of his life.
You just might not want to fhi^s
this year's Coca-Cola Clinic at The
Lake. The clinic demonstrated the
best of our community. I'm betting
the Winston Lake Senior Golf
Association and other avid golfers
in the community will come up
with something new to promote,
and foster golf for the youngsters
of our community
Until next time keep it in the
fairway.
Hanes Hosiery Gym Recreation Center
concludes successful summer program
Special to The Chromci i
Hanes Hosiery Gym Recre
ation Center recently concluded
one of its most successful and
busy summer programs. More
than 200 kids participated in the
.center's programs during the
2001 summer season.
Art Blevins, the center's
director, said his staff played an
important role in the program's
success. The staff consisted of
Keith James, who is also an
assistant football coach and
^head Softball coach at Winston
Salem State: Perez Wardlow. a
student-athlete at St. Paul's Col
lege; and several volunteers,
among them Carl Witherspoon.
who was named the center's Vol
unteer of the Year.
Hanes Hosiery's program
participants enjoyed a memo
rable summer filled with exciting
activities. It kicked off the sum
mer program with the
Crosby/Hanes Hosiery Drug
Free Basketball Tournament.
-All -Star coaches "Bighouse"
; Gaines. Howard West, Henry
i Hieks and Walter Faye served as
! coaches during the tournament.
! The following day there was an
i Awards Day for program partic
' ipants and a cookout, which
! included the presence of former
' *
NBA player and Hall of Famer
Bob Cousy, former Notre Dame
and NBA standouts Austin Carr
and Kelly Tripueka. and college
coaches Bill Gutheridge, Roy
Williams and Buzz Peterson,
who came to the center and
spent time signing autographs
and talking with the partici
pants.
Blevins took the kids out to
the Crosby Golf Tournament
the following day where they got
to meet Julius "Dr. J" Erving,
Johnny Unitas, Billy Joe DuPree
and Jim Taylor. Tom and Betty
Jones helped to make the trip to
the Crosby, possible, along with
Crosby director Robbie Wooten.
The summer session contin
ued with more than 200 partici
pants in the "Hot Hoops" Bas
ketball Summer Leagues for
players 11-14 and 15-18 and
summer baseball teams for 10-13
year-olds and 13-16 year-olds.
The center also had pro
grams during the summer for
arts and crafts and a sports card
collectors club. There were also
special trips and special events
throughout the summer, includ
ing the Citywide Track Meet and
the 15th Annual Hang the Net
Contest.
The 15th Annual Hang the
Net contest, sponsored by the
City Recreation Department, is
probably the hottest and most
popular event.
The event drew a huge crowd
and much media coverage and
participation, allowing the kids
to see a lot of television and
newspaper personalities up close
and in person.
Among those in attendance
were "Bighouse" Gaines; Wake
Forest basketball coach Skip
Prosser; WSSU coach Kermit
Blount; former WSSU quarter
back Tory Woodbury; WXII
personalities Cameron Kent.
Dave Goren, Bill Logan and
Josh KlafT. Scott Pryzwansky of
WFMY and John Dell of the
Winston-Salem Journal were
also present.
Hanes Hosiery summer staff members Carl Wltherspoon, Perez
Wardlow, Art Blevins and Keith James.
