Mount Zion Baptist Church to hold Men's Day worship service SPECIAL TQ THE C'HRU.NLC'LE The men of Mount Zion Baptist Church are poised to celebrate with a special worship service at the church this week. Martin Pickett, who is a chaplain with the Forsyth County Jail and Prison Min istries. will be the guest speaker at the 11 o'clock service on Sunday morning. Representa tives from the laity of the church w ill lend their support to the celebration through special music, litanies and other partic ipations. Pickett's appearance as the Men's Day speaker underscores a re-emerging emphasis of the Christian church in its outreach programs and social ministries. According to a spokesman for the Men's Day emphasis. "The chaplain's work with prison populations, the home less. AIDS patients and other target groups like them in the community help us to rethink the question: Am I my brother's keeper?" A graduate of Shaw Univer sity Divinity School. Pickett represents the dual dynamics of a relevant social ministry and a powerful pulpit ministry. He serves on a number of commu nity boards, and he is active in the General State Baptist Con vention of North Carolina His training in clinical pastoral care gives him an additional sensi tivity for ministering to others. The program organizers for Men's Day at Mount Zion are impressed with his compassion and consistency in the service of human kindness. Regular listeners to the Tom Joyner radio show may remem ber the host's interview with Pickett. In that interview. Pick ett talked about the book club he organized for prison inmates. It is the first of its kind for a penal institution. About the book club. Pick ett said. "It is my version of a comprehensive approach to ministry. It helps me to develop and facilitate a mind, body and spirit method for meeting the total needs of the inmates." Traditionally. Men's Day functions in the church have centered on fund-raising or some oilier element of steward ship. Alexander Richardson, the chairman of Men's Day this year at Mount Zion. does not shy away from this objective, hut he is quick to point out that other elements of fellowship and ministry are at the center of Men's Day 2001. A fellowship supper. African travelogue, youth walk-a-lhon and Bible study were included in the Men's Day calendar of activities this year. Successes in those ventures and the pending worship experience with Chaplain Martin Pickett underscore the clarion call to all the men of Mount Zion. Dr. Serenus T. Churn Sr. is the senior minister and pastor at Mount Zion Baptist Church. 050 File Street in Winston Salem. On his watch, all the events of Men's Day are open to the general public.
