The guest speaker will be Rev. J R. Freeman, pastor of l?iited Institutional Baptist Qiurch in Greensboro. * Freeman is a native of Raleigh. He accepted Christ at Ihe age of 7, and was baptized at the Fayetteville Street Bap tist Church (now First Cos mopolitan Baptist Church) of [hdeigh. where he served as a Sunday school superintendent and a junior deacon. I Freeman acknowledged God's call at an early age and preached his initial sermon in .1981 while a student at N.C. Agricultural and Technical State University (A&T) of Greensboro, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in counseling and social work. Continuing his studies, he received a master of divinity degree from Virginia Union University in Richmond, Va.. and in 1995 he graduated front Howard University School of Divinity in Wash i n g t o n , D.C.. with -a doctor of min i s t r y degree. Free man is actively involved in denom inational as well as civic and community work. He serves on the Ministers Council of the General Baptist State Conven tion of North Carolina and. as vice moderator and chairman of the Ordination Council for the Rowan Baptist Association. He organized the Underground Railroads to the Polls voter registration and transportation to the polls project. He has served on the board of directors for the East Market Street Redevelopment Corp.. Family Advocacy Council and the United Community Develop ment Corp.. a 50IC3 initiative organized through United Insti tutional Baptist Church. Freeman also organized a fund-raiser for the United Negro College Fund through communi ty church es in sup port of Bennett College, a historical ly black college in Greens boro, and t h e church won honors as "Church of the Year" for its continued support of the Greensboro NAACP. Freeman is married to the former Felicia McGhee of Clinton, N.C., an attorney, and they have two sons, Brandon Rayjon and Desmond Jarrell "Rescue the Perishing" is the theme for Dr. J. Mack Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund Service on Sunday March 10. The 11 a.m. speaker will be Dr. Harold L. Martin Sr. Martin is the 11th chief administrator and the sev enth chancellor of Winston Salem State University. Before his appointment as chancellor, Martin served in several administrative posi tions at <N.C. A&T State University, including vice chancellor for academic affairs, dean of the College of Engineering, and chair of electrical engineering, hav ing risen in faculty rank from assistant to full profes sor. Martin has written or co authored numerous articles, made numerous presenta tions at national and interna tional conferences, and has been recognized as The Chronicle's "Man of the Year," and the Winston Salem Business Journal's "10 to Watch." He has an exten sive back ground in elec t r i c a 1 engi neering, higher ,e d u c a - tion administration, strate gic planning, curriculum design, funded research and fund-raising, and business and industry consulting. A native of Winston Salem, Martin, was educat ed in the public schools of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County and obtained a bach elor of science degree in electrical engineering and a master of science degree in electrical engineering from N.C. A&T State University. He earned a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering at Vir ginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is married to Davida Wagner Martin and they have two sons, Harold Jr. and Walter. Emmanuel Baptist Church established its Scholarship Fund Service as a "living memorial" to late pastor Dr. Sir Walter Mack Sr. Mack served Emmanuel as pastor for 32 years before his death. He was widely known as a dynamic preach er, an evangelist, a humani tarian and an advocate for youths. The initial goal of the scholarship fund was to provide college tuition assistance to Mack's two sons, S.W. Mack Jr. and Christopher. After his sons completed their undergradu ate educations, the congre gation focused the fund on providing support and moti vation for Emmanuel youths in the pursuit of college degrees. This scholarship fund is one of many Emmanuel education ministries that have expanded under the leadership of Rev. Dr. John Mendez, pastor of Emmanuel. The gospel choir of Reynolds High School, which is called The Voices of Truth, also will grace the choir stand with its talents. Ahmad Johnson is the director. The choir performs at school functions and around the city by invitation. The choir will depart from robes and the members will be dressed in dark skirts and pants and white blouses and shirts.
