Top Teens complete community project at YWtA
SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE
The YWCA of Winston
Salem recently presented "Rap
About Race," a youth challenge
to stop racism.
"Rap about Race" allowed a
diverse local group of teen
agers to engage in intense dia
logue about the race, culture.
and ethnic matters that affect
society and their own personal
worlds as teen-agers. "Rap
about Race." also provided
teens with ideas and possibili
ties for changing negative per
ceptions into positive actions.
The teen-agers deveroped
community projects that helped
build relationships. The local
chapter of Teens of America was
one of the youth groups creating
community projects as a result
of their participation in Rap
About Race. The teen-agers out
lined a park beautification proj
ect on the grounds of the
YWCA and revamped an unde
veloped garden with a new
design.
Minnie Ervin, president of
Ladies of Distinction, said, "It
was a joy to work with such a
good group of kids. They eager
ly worked in the garden and
were determined to finish it with
perfection."
After completing the park
project, the Top Teens played
host to an international food
tasting party. Teens and guests
were required to bring cultural
ly-specific recipes. Chef Don
McMillan provided internation
al cuisine for the occasion.
"Rap About Race" was
sponsored by the YWCA's Mil
lennium Village, a hub of race
relations activities. The Z.
Smith Reynolds Foundation'^
"Race Will Not Divide Us" Ini
tiative provided funding for
"Rap About Race."
Other projects -of the
YMCA's Millennium Village
include Sisters Undivided, a
cross-cultural dinner series; and
A Family Affair, a cross-cultural
gathering for community fami
lies.
