Create customized city and county maps with GIS data Data compiled by Winston-Salem M and Forsyth County for their Geographic Information System is now available on line through the city's website, giving t business people, developers, residents and other interested parties access to sophisticated new tools to help in their planning and decision making. Data stored in the GIS system can be used to create customized maps. For example, a developer can combine information about flood plains with information about tax parcels and zoning information to create a map that shows what portion of a low-lying tract can be developed, and what type of zoning that ) . tract carries. "The beauty of GIS is that it allow t users to visually combine different sets of information to see, literally, the big picture," said Dennis Newman, thechief information officer for the city. The GIS information is available in a self-contained website within the city's ? website (www.cityofws.org). To get to it, click on the button labeled "GIS Maps"! on the lower right side of the home page, or go straight to www.cityofws.org/GIS. The GIS website gives users access to downloadable sets of data, including information about tax parcels, street centerlines, ward lines, schools, zoning, bBl police patrol districts, and color aerial vgll,'- photos of the county. B, Viewing and manipulating the informatbn in map form requires special GIS software, called ArcExplorer, that can be downbaded for free. The site also includes several maps that can be downloaded and viewed with Acrobat Reader. This program, too, can be downloaded for free. Viewing color aerial photos requires a third form of software, called MrSid GeoViewer, that also can be downloaded for free. All of these sets of data can be displayed in any combination once the data is downloaded and added to one of the specified software viewers. Users can display information, such as street names or names of schools, or I remove it, as needed. In addition, users can customize the presentation of the information by changing colors and fonts. Users can also "zoom in" as necessary, can pan the image in any direction, and can measure distances. Links to download ArcExplorer and the other programs are included on the site's Help page. The GIS site has been set up to allow users to request customized sets of data. There is a fee for creating customized data sets, reports, or maps. Users who are working with the city or county on a project can use the website to upload data needed, for example, to compile a GIS data set. The site also has links to Forsyth County's GeoData Explorer website, which contains information about tax parcels in Forsyth County. There also are links to a number of GIS-related websites that can expand users' knowledge of the GIS system and how it can be used. The GIS website requires use of a standard personal computer with a web browser. The free software may require additional RAM and a faster processor.
