St. Mark celebrates
pastor and first lady's
28th anniversary

St. Mark Baptist Church family is
celebrating the anniversary of Pastor
James Fulwood and First Lady Ful
wood, having 28 years of service
with St. Mark Church. Several
events will take place to celebrate
this great occasion.
On April 5 at 7:30 p.m.. Pastor
Samuel Cornelius and members of
New Jerusalem Baptist Church will
open this celebration with a worship
service.
April o at ft p.m. a banquet will be
given in their honor at the Ramada
Pla/.a Coliseum. Pastor John Parks of
New Hope Baptist Chureh will be
the guest speaker.
On April 7 at 4 p.m.. Pastor
Robert McGowen and members of
Galilee Baptist Church will be the
guests to close this great celebration.
All pastors and area churches are
invited to attend all of these services.

Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church Choir continues a tradition

The Cathedral Choir of
Goler Metropolitan AME Zion
Church. 1435 E. Fourth Street,
will present its 68th rendition
of the Easter cantata "The
Seven Last Words of Christ,"
by Theodore Dubois, on Easter
Sunday, March 31, at 7 p.m.
This tradition began Easter
Sunday, March 27. 1932, at 8
p.m. as Dr. Ashley L.
Cromwell stepped up to the
podium to direct the 40-voice
choir of Goler Memorial AME
Zion Church in its first per
formance of this cantata. Two
years Dr. Permilla Dunston
directed the choir in the pres
entation of Brahm's
"Requiem."
This year's soloists include
soprano Cathy Anderson, tenor
Adrian -Swygert and baritone
John Williams.
Anderson is a native of
Marion. SC.. where she
attended the public schools.
She is a graduate of Johnson C.
Smith University. She has
studied with Vivien King
Bright and Betty Allen of the i
N.C. School of the Arts. She
sang with the choir and was :
under the tutelage of D'Walla :
Burke of Winston-Salem State I
University. I
She has been soloist with t
the Goler Cathedral Choir. (
Twin City Choristers and the !
Shanta-Malia Ensemble of
Hanes CME Church. She also
has been a soloist in Handel's
"Messiah" at First Baptist
Church. She is studying at
High Point University and is
employed in Winston
Salem/Forsyth County Schools
in the division of exceptional
children at Bolton Elementary
School. She is married and has
one son.
Swygert is a native of Win
uon-Salem and attended Win
iton-Salem State University.
He is a member of the N.C.
Slack Repertory Company and
he Twin City Choristers. He is
lirector of the Senior Choir at
saints Home United Methodist
Church. He has appeared in
numerous plays, including
"Night Voices'*; "Don't Bother
Me, 1 Can't Cope" and "Cele
bration." He studied voice with
Dr. Permilla Flack Dunston.
Dr. Robert Morris. Dr. James
B. Kinchen and Dr. Fred Tan
ner.
Williams, the baritone, is a
graduate of the N.C. School of
the Arts. There, his teachers
included Alice Howland. Nor
man Farrow and William Beck.
He also studied voice with
Rose Bampton at the Academia
Musicale Chigianain. Siena.
Italy.
While attending the N.C. -
School of the Arts, he was the
recipient of the Vittoria Gian
nini Scholarship Award in
Music and was selected as the
Young Artist Award winner
from the Charleston Symphony
Orchestra. He also received the
prestigious Bryan Artist Award
from the N.C. Symphony.
He is a former Southeastern
Regional winner of the Metro
politan Opera National Council
auditions. He has performed
oratorio and recital concerts at
all the major universities in the
state. He has been a soloist at
First Presbyterian Church.
Augsburg Lutheran Church
and St. Paul's Episcopal
Church. He was the soloist in
Beethoven's "Ninth Sympho
ny" in May.
He is married and has two
children.
A. Louisa Lyerly Foy, a for
mer organist and directress of
the Cathedral Choir, will again
conduct the choir. Foy is a
retired music teacher with the
local school system and for
merly worked at Graham High
School and Eastern High
School. She is a graduate ot
Winston-Salem State Universi
ty and the University of New
York, with further study at
N.C. Agricultural and Techni
cal State University in Greens
boro.
