Religion MBC chairman and CEO pledges $100,000 to School of Religion at Morehouse College SPECIAL TO THF. CHRONiri F ATLANTA, Ga. - Willie E. Gary, senior partner of Gary, Williams, Parenti, Finney, Lewis, McManus, Watson & Sperando and chairman and CEO of the MBC television network, has pledged $100,000 to the More house College School of Religion, Gary spoke to the several hun dred people at the school's 57th Annual CD Hubert Preaching/Lecture Series about the significance of serving as role models to our young people. He then told of how he went from growing up as a migrant worker to becoming a millionaire attorney and cable television executive. "I went to school most days without shoes on my feet," Gary said. "But it didn't stop me because I wanted to be somebody. And you can do it too. You just have to want it real bad. "You have to want it so bad you can taste it. Dream big dreams and have a refuse-to-be denied attitude. And if you do those things, nothing can stop you." Gary was recognized in the form of written proclamations from the governor's office and from the new mayor of Atlanta for his endless contributions as a role model tor the youths Ot Atlanta and the entire state of Georgia. He then surprised everyone by announcing that he was making Morehouse a member of his $100,000 Club, a list of histori cally black colleges and universi ties to which Gary has donated $100,000 or more in recent years. School officials then surprised Gary by honoring hint with the school's legendary Eagle Award for his long-standing contribu tions to education and religion. The church is at 1014 Ivy Ave. Mount Olive Baptist will celebrate church, pastoral anniversaries SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Mount Olive Baptist Church congregation will cel ebrate the 93rd anniversary of the church and the 23rd anniversary of its beloved pas tor, Rev. Charles E. Gray, "Son of Thunder." on April 7 at 4 p.m. The theme is "Mov ing By the Power." The guest speaker will be Rev. Joseph R. Samuels from St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church. "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths." This is what a group of Chris Rev. and Mrs. Gray tian people did when God led them to establish Mount Olive Baptist Church in 1909. Our first place of worship was a storefront building on South Ridge Avenue. We rent ed the building for several years and burned the mortgage in 1921. In 1934. the building was torn down and a new building erected. The construction of 1-40 and U.S. 52 caused us to relo cate. On Sept. 5, 1954. we marched from the building on South Ridge Avenue to our present location. Our first pastor was Rev. McQuater. Following McQuater were several pas tors. Under the leadership of these pastors. God brought Mount Olive a mighty long way. On April 7, 1979. Rev. Gray was called as our pastor. Under his leadership and guid ance, our membership has grown tremendously. We have formed a Junior Deacon and Deaconess Board, a Spiritual Choir, a Gospel Choir, a Mass Choir, an evangelism class, a youth department, a singles ministry, a dance and step ministry, and a security min istry. Also under Gray's leader ship. we have renovated our church four times. In our latest renovation, we doubled our seating capacity, enlarged our fellowship hall, added an exquisite pastor's study, a men's restroom. six class rooms." illuminating lights, a sound system. 48 pews, a neon outdoor sign and a 200-car 1 parking lot. In 1993, we released out first album. "Let God Be God." composed by Rev. Gray, and the dynamic play also titled "Let God be God." written by Rev. Gray's son. Michael Gray, was presented to the public. In 1996. we released our second album. "Magnify Him." and presented our sec ond play. "Order My Steps," both written and composed by Rev. Gray.1 In 1997. we pre sented to the public our play "The Upper Room to Cal vary." also written by Rev. 1 Gray. Our Sunday school and ushers are strongly represent ed in district and stale organi zations. With all the work that we have done so far. and we will do in the future, nothing will ever be more important than bringing lost souls to Christ. The public is invited to| attend.
