Alums create black college football for Madden
[Excerpted from Otto Fad's story
on Sportsnetwork.com)
For those looking to put some
black college flavor into their comput
er football games, Marcus Green and
Paul Rollin have something for you.
Green, an alumnus of Florida
A&M and Rollin. front Morehouse,
are co-workers and friends who have
created an addition to Madden NFL
Football 2002 entitled "Madden Black
College Football" or "Madden BCF."
It allows computer gaming enthu
siasts to select from a long list of black
college teams, plus 11 others referred
to as non-BCF, or sometimes as PWC's
(predominantly white colleges), to
play their games.
"We wanted to provide a way for
BCF gamers to play with their own
teams," said Green. "But we also want
ed to raise the awareness of HBCU's -
both the athletics and the academics -
especially to high school students."
And what a terrific tool for doing
that they have developed!
To play the game, you'll need a
copy of John Madden NFL Football
2002 (PC version) and to download the
roster files from the Madden BCF
website (http://maddenbcf.meacfans.
com/).
Green emphasizes that Electronic
Arts Sports (EA Sports) developers did

all the programming for the game,
while Green and Rollin took advantage
of a "custom rosters" feature built into
the newest version of the game. Neither
is an agent or employee of EA Sports.
"The John Madden NFL series,"
said Green, "dates back to the Sega
Genesis era (circa 19901. and has
always been a sports-gamer favorite,
for its realistic game play and graphics.
"In the 2002 incarnation of the
Madden NFL software, there are fea
tures which allow for custom team cre
ation (including logo design) and on
line league play, to coincide with supe
rior graphics, challenging game play
and a variety of settings and play calls
to match wits with the computer or a
human opponent."
Green and Rollin worked together
on the project in 2001, and this year
joined forces with a third HBCU alum
nus, Floyd Hill from Florida A&M.
Floyd is well-known throughout black
college circles as the architect of the
fun and popular website,
MEACfans.com.
Together, Green, Rollin. and Hill
have created a realistic experience, by
inputting logos, color schemes, two
deep rosters, and statistics for their
teams. So when you take control of a
Madden BCF team, you set the lineup,
you call the plays, you immerse your
self in college football action.
Green says that you can complete
a game in about 45 minutes, and their
roster files are offered free-of-charge
to black college football enthusiasts.
However, while the three HBCU
grads designed their game to appeal to
serious gamers, and to touch youth of
all ethnicities with an important mes
sage, "We want to have fun while
doing it," said Green.
"An added bpnus is that, for us
alumni w ho happen to be PC gamers, it
gives us an outlet or football fix' in the
off-season, and adds an extra dimen
sion during the season."
So, what's next for the three col
lege football enthusiasts and their bur
geoning effort to bring HBCU football
to the masses?
"We are trying to get enough inter
est to start a league," said Green, "hope
fully representing each team in the
game."
At the website you can fipd out
more about league play, check the
screen shots (like the one of Slingin'
Sammy getting harassed by a horde of
Hornets I, or download the roster files.
Instructions are posted, as are links to
the official websites of the schools rep
resented by Madden BCF teams.

Make Your Travel Plans
Black college football fans can get
ready for a new classic game this sea
son in an exciting venue.
The first annual Silver Dollar
Classic is set for Sept. 21 of this year in
America's fun city. Las Vegas, Nevada.
Two-time SWAC champion
Grambling Stale will take on
Tennessee State at 7 p.m. at Sam Boyd
Stadium in the inaugural game being
put on by Robinson Entertainment of
Inglewood. Ca.
A Step Show. Battle of the Bands
and Pre-Game Gala on Friday. Sept. 20
and a Career and College Expo
Saturday serve as precursors to a great
on-field match-up between two of the
most legendary football programs in
black college grid history.
Grambling. under former quarter
back and NFL great Doug Williams,
has reclaimed its place atop the black
college grid rankings, posting a 10-1
record last year en route to taking its
second SWAC and black college cham
pionship in a row.
Tennessee State, under third-year
coach James Reese, finished 8-2 a year
ago and distinguished itself by going
undefeated against black college com
petition (wins over Jackson State.
MEAC champion Florida A&M.
Howard and Alabama A&M).
Did we mention the game's in Las
Vegas?
Another Classic
Classic black college football
rejums to Columbus, Ohio on Oct. 5
when Morehouse and Kentucky Slate
meet in the first Midwest Heritage
Classic. Columbus Crew Stadium will
be the venue for this S1AC match-up.
Morehouse is coming off its best sea
son in years, an 8-2 mark that tied the
Maroon Tigers for the SIAC title.
Kentucky State struggled to a 3-7 finish
last season under new coach, Donald
Smith.
Classic Shuffle
It was announced recently that
North Carolina A&T and North
Carolina Central have shifted their
Aggie-Eagle Classic from Raleigh to
Charlotte.
The rivalry, which had drawn
crowds of 40.000-plus to Raleigh's
Carter-Finley Stadium, will be played
this year on August 31 at Ericsson
Stadium, home of the NFL's Carolina
Panthers.
Increased rental costs for Carter
Finley spurred administrations of both
schools to decide on the shift which they
feel will also give their institutions
greater exposure in the Charlotte mar
ket.
Moving out of Charlotte to Atlanta
is the South Carolina State \s. North
Carolina A&T game, formerly billed as
the Ciirolinas Classic. The game is set
for Nov. 23 at the Georgia Dome and
will be the 2nd annual Peach State
Classic.
Though the two played the game in
Orangeburg last year. Charlotte had been
the site for the previous six seasons.
A&T met Jackson State in the inaugur
al PSC last season.
BCSP Tidbits
? The crop of black college players likely to be selected in the April 20-21 NFL Draft
is relatively small this year after setting a record for futility a year ago.
An all-time low of four black college players were picked last year, none in the
first three rounds of the draft held on the first day of the two-event. It was the first time
in 17 years a black college player was not selected in the first three rounds.
This season. Tuskegee defensive hack Roosevelt Williams is the highest rated
black college prospect on most draft boards. Williams is rated among the top ten cor
nerbacks and performed well at both the Senior Bowl in Mobile. Al.. and the NFL
Combine in Indianapolis. He is projected as a second or third round pick.
A group of others could be taken in the first day but more than likely will go in
uic Vtiiiv iuuiius 01 inc seconu uav. iney inctuuc i, ramming iinenackcr Kooert
Taylor. North Carolina A&T offensive lineman Qasim Mitchell, who at 6-5,
355,some say was the biggest player at the Combine. Alabama State offensive tack
le Tango McCauley. Jackson State wide receiver Lawrence Story and Hampton
defensive end Gregory Scott. A&T running back Maurice Hicks, the MEAC's
offensive player of the year this season, is projected to go in the second day despite
being limited in his ability to work out following knee surgery in December.
Southern wide receiver Devin Lewis. Winston-Salem State safety Stephon
Kelly. Tennessee State offensive lineman Lawrence Smith and Tenneesse State
safety Eric Joyce are at the head of another group of prospects w ho should slip in to
the later rounds.
A detailed breakdown of black college NFL draft prospects is scheduled for the
BCSP next week.
