The church has sponsored Juneteenth a little over seven years and members of the Black History Committee served as N.C. representa ; lives to help provide infor niation and advocacy for this celebration to become a state observance. N.C. residents should know that Juneteenth was ratified in the N.C. General Assembly on June 22, 1999. as a state observance. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery. On June 19. 1865. in Galveston. Texas, the last known group of slaves learned of their freedom. President' Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipa tion Proclamation more than two years before Juneteenth. Rev. Ronald V. Myers Sr.. M.D., has led the movement to establish Juneteenth as a state holiday or observance. Juneteenth is recognized as either a state holiday or statewide observance in many states. The Washington June teenth 2002 National Holiday Observance is scheduled for June 13-19 at the Lincoln Memorial. National Mall and U.S. Capitol.
