Children learn the importance of
writing at T-Cal Summer Camp
SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE
For many children, sum
mer is a time for resting from
school, watching television
and having fun with friends.
At The Center for Accelerat
ed Learning Summer Camp
(T-Cal Camp), the children
learned that they could also
have fun through writing.
Students learned how to
express themselves in the
most colorrui, imaginative
and descriptive ways possi
ble from the workshop pre
senter. writer, poet, and
Cable 6 Television host of
"Writers. Poets and Friends"
and "Diamond in the Ruff,"
Jayne Penne.
Pennd told cKiidren that
writing is a way of sharing
information, and poetry is a
good way of telling some
thing in a different way.
Using figures of speech
which are lively and rich
helps readers see the images
and understand the feelings
being expressed. Using fig
ures of speech such as simi
ate very vivid pictures in the
mind of a reader or listener.
Penne shared several |
poems from her "Popcorn
Poetry Book" and some of
the T-shirts that she
designed. She also read from
Shel Silverstein. Langston
Hughes and many other
famous poets to help inspire
the new writers.
The children were told
not to be too concerned
about vocabulary at first, but
to sound out the words and '
the art of refining their writ
ing skills would come later.
Students were instructed
to just write! Penne asked
that they write about their
feelings through words that
meant something to them
such as their family history,
friends, dreams, hobbies, and
any experiences that they
had. whether old or new.
They were told to write in
journals: write words upside
down, in circles, or on nap
kins, pads, or on index cards;
write in the morning or at
night or anytime things
popped into their heads.
The children were then
asked to pair off and read
poetry to each other and then
read aloud to the class. After
reading, the students wrote
poetry, songs, short stories
and read aloud to the class.
They also made bookmarks
with their own slogans writ
ten on them.
On the last day of the
workshop, Pennd reminded
the children that there are
many kinds of writings -
such as novels, creative writ
ing. short stories, greeting
cards, comic and journal
writing, and rap songs -
which can be turned into
lucrative businesses.
Pennd urged the children
to read. read. read, so they
can write, write, write,
because writing connects the
world.
