Massey family reunion held in Winston-Salem SPECIAL TO THE C HRONICLE June 22 and 23 marked another annual Massey family reunion. Winston-Salem members were the hosts, with Carrie Massey-Robinson as coordi nator. The committee consist ed of: Rev. Henry and Evange list Bessie Massey (advisers). Cedric and Sandra Branch. Vivian Jones, Courtney Massey, Willie Massey Jr., Nita Matthews, Loretta Mclv er, Robert Moore, Howard and Alice Thomas and Marie Wat son. The event started on Satur day, with a picnic at Tangle wood Park in Clemmons. There were games such as vol leyball, horseshoes and other entertainment. Souvenir bags were given to everyone that attended. T-shirts were also available. There was even some fishing at the lake by the shelter! There were lots of foods to enjoy, especially fish, everyone's favorite. The chefs were Willie Massey and Howard Thomas. They kept cthe fish, hot dogs and ham burgers going until the end. Delicious poundcake was a treat for everyone, baked by cousin Vivian Jones. After enjoying watermelon, it was time to leave and get ready for the evening event. Members gathered at Northside Lanes on Patterson Avenue for bowling. Howard and Alice Thomas coordinated this event. The top bowlers were Howard Thomas of Win ston-Salem, Jeff Ziegeler of Charlotte and J.W. Cathcart of China Grove. Everyone enjoyed the evening. The final event was on Sunday. Members met at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church for morning worship. Rev. J.R. Samuels is pastor. The service was very inspir ing. The various choirs sang beautifully and Samuels deliv ered an inspiring message from St. John 7:19, "Rational ity of Emotions." Dinner was served in the church fellowship hall after the service. At the end of dinner, announcements, recognitions and awards were given. Tro phies were presented to some members for their dedicated service to the Massey family reunion this year. They include: Cedric and Sandra Branch, Vivian Jones, Courtney Massey, Willie Massey Jr., Nita Matthews, Robert Moore, Howard and Alice Thomas, Marie Watson, all of Winston-Salem: and Nathaniel Clement of Mel bourne, Fla. Roses were given to Evan gelist Bessie Massey and Loretta Mclver for their help also. Special gifts were given to: the one that traveled the farthest - Nathaniel Clement, Melbourne. Fla.; the oldest attendee - Betty Massey, 75 years old, of Lexington. N.C.; and the youngest attendee - Breaja Houston, 4 months old, of Salisbury, N.C. A gift was given to Ran dolph Massey of Columbus Ga., for his family's surprise visit. Family members traveled from various areas such as Charlotte, Lexington. China Grove and Salisbury. N.C., Georgia and Florida. About 175 people attended the events o I?J 1 .1 on Saturday and Sunday. The Massey family reunion was organized in the eastern part of the United States by the late Mose Massey in the early 1960s in Greensboro. At0 that time it was a one-day event on a Sunday in June. The first picnic was held at Blum Park in Winston-Salem in June 1985, with the late Mamie Massey Moore as coordinator. Since that time, it has been a two-day event. The reunion this year proved to be one of the best and most successful yet. The next reunion will be in Lexington. N.C.. in 2003.
