has been named to (he top
post at the National Council
of Negro Women Inc.
(NCNW).
She will head the coalition
of 38 national organitafions
founded by civil rights
activist and educator Mary
McLeod Bethune as NCNW
iooks to "strengthen" its
"infrastructure."
Cooper has an extensive
background in the Washing
ton, D.C.. political arena,
serving as senior staff admin
istrator and later assistant
treasurer with Congressional
Black Caucus (CBC) before
joining AARP. She also has

served on the African Ameri
can Advisory Board of
Georgetown University.
"Ms. Cooper brings to
NCNW invaluable expertise
from overseeing the opera
tions of one of the world's
largest and most successful
membership organizations."

and president emerita of

strengthen our infrastructure
and greatly expand out capac
ity, Ms. Cooper will play a
leading role with a dynamic
management team."
NCNW, founded in 1935.
has 250 community-based
chartered sections that reach 4
million women to meet
Bethune's goal of uniting
women's groups and to
increase their power.

Muslims to hold town-hall
forum on Farrakhan trip

As part of an effort to
inform local residents
about Minister Louis Far
rakhan's current peace
mission, the Winston
Salem Nation of Islam
Mosque will hold a town
hall-style meeting
Wednesday on the cam
pus of Winston-Salem
State University.
Farrakhan embarked
on the journey late last
month and is scheduled
to visit several nations in
the Middle East and
Africa to discuss the
United States' current
war on terror and
decades-old fighting
between Israelis and
Palestinians. This week.
Farrakhan visited Iraq.
where he urged President
Bush not to launch war
against that nation. At
press time, l arrakhan had
landed in Durban. South
Africa.
A news conference
given by the minister at
the National Press Club
before his departure will
be shown at the town hall
meeting, mosque offi
cials said. There will also
be a question and answer
and discussion period
during which people can
ask about Farrakhan's
goals and objectives.
The forum will he
held Wednesday at 7 p.m.
