Rev. Parkt God forgives us; we must forgive others Lesson Scripture: Psalm 32 Lesson Aims: to cite the ele ments of God's forgiveness, to recognize that sin puts them in a miserable state, and to always be willing to forgive others. Background: Our lesson today comes from one of the "penitential" psalms (6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, 143), Don't let this term floor you; it simply means to "be truly sorrowful." Often the word contrite (deep, crushing sorrow) is used. To fully appreci ate Psalm 32 you must read 51 first. We know the story of David and Bathsheba. It was only after the prophet Nathan confronted him that he acknowledged his sin. Read II Samuel 11 and 12 for the most intriguing story and the hope it offers. David penned Psalms 51 and 32 after this inci dent. Psalms 32 and 42 are also considered instructional (maschil) because they teach oth ers how to approach God. ? Lesson: David asks for for giveness (St) and experiences great joy when God grants it. The introduction is very sim ilar to the Beatitudes. Happiness and relief come in knowing that God forgives the penitent. How comforting it is to know that sin will not count against you. Please note that David does not say that the consequences of sin are no more. He describes the guilt and misery that occur because he would not acknowledge his sin. "Your hand was heavy upon me" usually meant that a serious illness would come (New Jerome Biblical Commentary). Consider his state of I mind after Uriah died. Confes sion to God gives David a hiding place. He admonishes believers to i quickly seek forgiveness of sins before more dangers occur Isaiah 55:6, written three centuries later, echoes that same idea. David's safe haven is in God alone! Hp>is wiser now than before and offers advice to oth ers. His instructions are to remain humble and follow God because He alone knows the way. Avoid the anguish and learn from him. David shouts with joy and is relieved now that God has for given. He promised God that he would instruct others (51) to seek His forgiveness and rejoice in the fellowship. Application: Joy exists because of freedom. Sin binds and causes pain, misery, depres sion and anxiety. When the sin is not acknowledged the aforemen tioned states are heightened. David experienced all of this before Nathan's visit. He con fesses and repents. The 4>ord is just to forgive. We also have experienced the discomforts of sin. For relief God offers His for giveness so that we are no longer bound to that sin. We rejoice in the victory over evil. There are limes that we need to forgive others. Don't be arro gant; God forgives us; we must forgive others. We are to take the high road in some instances and go to the personfs) when we aren't the culprits. Humility is the aim but if we aren't careful our aiTogance will make us act like animals (verse 9). God wants to forgive and reconcile us back to Him. His willingness to forgive isn't a license to sin. He knows our hearts! When forgiveness comes, our burdens are lifted and we get a new lease on life. Take someone to Sunday school with you.
