Alpha Mu Sigma - a year in review SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Alpha Mu Sigma chap ter of Sigma Gamma Rho.Soror ity Inc. recently elected officers for the 2002-2004 term. The new officers are Earline Sutton, basileus; Naomi Jones, first anti basileus; Sharon Cooper, second unu-basileus; Dakisha Williams, third anti-basileus: Turkesshia Moore, grammateus; Cjirol Henry, anti-grammateus. The last sorority year has been active and successful. In keeping with the many national projects and national motto ("Greater Service, Greater Progress"), an annual Founders Day program was held in November. Soror Turkesshia Moore was named soror of the Year, and the Community Ser vice Award was presented to Rev. Garland Wallace for his many community contributions. Mju December, the chapter m 'its annual Give a Family CTtristiflas outreach project as well as caroling at New Begin nings and Golden Lamb rest hotaes in Winston-Salem. In MKph, a youth symposium. The w ?* Next Level, was held at the Uni versity of North Carolina at Greensboro in conjunction with the Omicron Eta Undergraduate Chapter. Issues such as drug abuse, self-esteem, goal setting and career planning were dis cussed. In a continuing effort to inform the community about health issues, a health fair is held annually in Match at the Win ston Lake YMCA. The members also participated in the Winston Salem Multiple Sclerosis Walk and served as marshals for the N.C. Special Olympics opening ceremonies along with other N.C. Sigma Gamma Rho chap ters. Because Sigma Gamma Rho was founded on educational principles. Alpha Mu Sigma continues to motivate youths and teach them attitudes of success and determination. In doing so, the group continues to donate school supplies and educational materials to at-risk schools through the Operation Big Book Bag program. East Winston Pri mary School was chosen as the school to assist this year. The Philo affiliate, ^also known as friends of Sigma, has also been very busy. The Philo affiliate is a very important part of the chapter. Philo members provide support where it is need ed and continue to devote them selves to the principles of Sigma. They have participated in all of the chapter's events as well as:, received accolades of their own. At the sorority's 2002 regional conference, the Philos won first place in the scrapbook competi tion. first place for the Commu nity Service Award and third place in the arts and crafts divi sion. In the months to come, Alpha Mu Sigma and the Philo affiliate will attend the sorority's 49th Biennial Boule in July in Miami and will host the E. Jerry Jones Golf Tournament at Win ston Lake Golf Course Sept. 14 and IS.
