Brandon, Harris wed SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Aleashia Lavonnc Harris of Salisbury and Brent Thomas Brandon of Winston-Salem were married at 4 p.m. July 27 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on the campus of Catawba Col ege in Salisbury. The Rev. Louis Turner and Kwami O. H. Jones officiated. The bride is the daughter of Andrew I D. and Linda D. Har ris. Her maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Kizer Sifford of Granite Quany and the late Errna Sifford. Her paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hams of Spencer and the late Mrs. Earlene Harris. The bride graduated cum aude from Winston-Salem State University, is a member of Delta Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc and is a certified therapeutic recre ational specialist for the W.G. Hefner V.A. Medical Cpnter in Salisbury. ?,.Jhe groom is the son of William T and Andrais L. Bran don of Winston-Salem. His maternal grandparents are Robert and Wilhelmina Long of Winston-Salem. His paternal grandparents are Fannie R. Brandon and the late John W. Brandon of Davidson The groom attends E.C.P.I. College of Technology in Charlotte and is a distribution selector for Food Lion Inc. The bride was escorted by her father. The maid of honor was the bride's sister, Tara D. White. The bridesmaids were Tamika N. Brandon, the groom's sister; Rosalyn L. Brown; LaSheka F. Walker; Kimber L. Hampton; Brandy A Whitaker; Sherby R. Hudson; Tameka N. Brown; Leslie E. Horn; Maia S. Jones; Nikki I Marshall and Joy L. Kennedy. The hostesses were Deneia B. Attucks, Tia C. Glass, Nikki N. Holmes, Candice Y. Johnson and Michelle Ruff. The groom's father was the best man. The groomsmen were Harold G. Brandon Jr., Timothy E. Smith, Richard M. Grier, Shonn L. Brandon. Stanton R. Brandon, Haywood L. Wilson III, Christopher D. Redd. Robert M. Kimber, Rodney C. Hardin Clarence N. McKee III and Tito J. White. The ushers were John T. Allen, Stefan W. Brandon. Conway B. Garlington, Jerrin K. Hamilton, Kevin D. Krider and Brandon N. Sifford. The ring bearer was Timothy E. Smith II. Aleashia Lavonne Harris married Brent Thomas Brandon. The flower girls were Alexis Johnson and Narielle Reid. Cyn thia Jackson designed the flow ers. The wedding director was Jean Kennedy. The guest-regis ter attendant was Twanna Hop kins, and the gift-register atten dant was Jennifer Kennedy. Tynia Brandon and Keely White were the bell ringers. The Bible carrier was Tianca White. Wedding music was provid ed by Devona Brown and Teresa Moore, soloists; Rebecca Stin son, soloist and musician; Ren dall Howell, trumpeter; the R.P.J. Voices of Zion Choir; and the Rev. Nathaniel Gails, pianist. The reception was held at the Peeler Crystal Lounge on the Catawba College campus in Sal isbury. lite groom's parents hosted the rehearsal dinner at the Holi day Inn Conference Center in Salisbury. After a honeymoon to Orlando, Fla., the couple will live in Salisbury. Civic club awarded grant SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE "West Salem Civic Club has been awarded a grant of $ 13,800 by The Winston-Salem Founda tion," Michael Bricker, member, announced. The grant will be used to build social capital by using neighborhood volunteers to apply for historic district status. "Our organization was founded in 1947. For 55 years our neighborhood organization has strived to raise civic aware ness in the West Salem neigh borhood. Most all functions of the Civic Club were organized with the intentions of bringing neighbors together in a social setting. Our organizational pres ident is Robert Litaker." Bricker said. "The grant from The Win ston-Salem Foundation will give us additional resources to bring historic status to the neighborhood." The funds are made avail able from the ECHO Fund. The Winston-Salem Founda tion is a community foundation that supports charitable pro grams in Greater Forsyth Coun ty. It was founded in 1919 by Col. Francis Fries with a $1,000 gift and now administers more than 850 funds with total custo dial assets of more than $210 million. Doreen M. Sorensen has been named principal of Bolton Elementary, and Belinda M. Beard has been selected to lead Southwest Elementary. Sorensen worked in the Stokes County school district for eight years. She served as a counselor and principal at Chestnut Grove Middle School and most recently as principal of London Elemen tary. She was named Stokes County Principal of the Year in 2000-2001. Sorensen has held a num ber of other positions in edu cation since beginning her career in 1969 as a teacher. In addition to her work as a teacher, principal and coun selor, she has served as a dean of students, director of guid ance and director of special education. She has a bachelor's degree from Kean College in Union, N.J., and a master's degree from Trenton State College in Trenton, N.J. Beard was nafti'ed principal at Southwest Elementary after serving as assistant principal of the school since 1996. Before joining the staff at Southwest, Beard worked as a case manager for the school system, in-school suspension classroom teacher and school social worker. She has bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Beard is a 2000 graduate of the N.C. Principals' Executive Pro gram, earning the program's Outstanding Academic Achievement Award 4-H Equine Scholarship established SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Edward H. Leagans, agri cultural agent with the N.C. Cooperative Extension Ser vice, Forsyth County, was honored recently with the establishment of the Edward H. Leagans 4-H Equine Scholarship. The scholarship was established by the Forsyth County 4-H Horse Club leaders and volunteers in honor of Leagans' many years of service to the 4-H horse program in Forsyth County and North Carolina. "Eddie Leagans has served as a strong leader and guiding force for the 4H horse pro gram on the county, district, state and national levels," said Eunice Smoot, 4-H Horse Club leader. "It is because of his dedication, commitment and service that we establish this scholarship in his honor." The presentation was made during the State 4-H ?Horse Show in Raleigh on July 13. The scholarship will provide funding to a Forsyth County 4-H Horse Club mem ber to continue his or her col lege education.
