SportsWeek= ?^ ^ ?? - t ' april 17, 2qq3 BLACKOUT?: County lacks black high school football coaches BY ANTHONY HILL THE CHRONICLE There seems to be an extreme lack of black high school football coaches in Winston-Salem. Sure, football season is months away, but prime interviewing time is now for high school coaches. Many schools across the nation are evaluating candidates for coaching positions during the days, weeks and months leading up to the end of the school year in hopes of filling the vacancies before summer workouts. The number of openings may differ and vary each year, but there's constantly a lack of black coaches getting opportunities to till the void. "It's not just with high school," said Carver head coach Keith Wilkes. "There's not enough black coaches in high school, college or pro. They'll never be more black football coaches than white. 1 don't think we're really getting an equal chance to coach football, like we are in basketball. That's been my philosophy from the Start." Many black coaching candidates in Forsyth County don't feel Wilkes like they re gelling an equal opportunity to get hired. Even coaches with experience, talent and qualifications are finding it hard to even get looks from schools. Carver offensive back coach Rodney McKoy added: "I'm nationally qualified. I've coached in three different states. I've even coached some college ball. I inter viewed for the job at East Forsyth. 1 didn't get hired due to certain cir cumstances. I didn't even get an interview for the North Forsyth job. They said they were inter viewing the best candidates and ended up interviewing guys who were lateral entries and didn't even have their paperwork in order. I've got a master's degree, and I had my paperwork in order. It's real frustrating." No Forsyth County coach is more frustrated than Parkland's defensive coordinator and assis tant head coach Linwood Jerald. "You got that right." Jerald said. "When I came into this sys tem, in 1998, they told me the way See Blackout on B9 KRT Photo by Steve Deslich Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, right, presents Michael Jordan an American flag during a ceremony before the Washington Wizards' game against the New York Knicks on Monday. Reynolds to tennis wins BY ANTHONY HILL THE CHRONIC! I There aren't too many var sity tennis teams playing as well as the Demons of R.J. Reynolds right now. Not too many teams have been able to stop the team's late season charge either, especially not the Raiders of South Rowan. R.J. Reynolds (14-2. 6-0) smashed the Raiders in a clean sweep at Hanes Park 011 Monday. The game was a make-up of an earlier sched uled match that was post poned due to rain. The Demons didn't seent to be too affectfd by the postponement. As a matter of fact, they seemed to relish the opportu nity to beat up on a team in some good weather. "I'm not going to say that we were too worried." said Demons head coach Drew Shermeta. "We were confi dent. We've been pretty strong in the conference the last couple of years. So I did n't necessarily believe we had a reason to be worried. "I really think we're gel ting in shape for the state playoffs. That's one of the things we're gearing for. We've played some tough teams already to get us better prepared, both in conference and out of conference. I think we're heading toward where we want to be. which is com petitive on the state level." Mission accomplished. R.J. Reynolds looked good enough to play on the nation al level en route to a flawless effort against the Raiders. The Demons' three captains defi nitely stepped up their level of performance during the matches. No. I Arendell Carl ton. who's also a strong can didate for conference Player of the Year, had his way with South Rowan's Sean Burney. He dusted Burney 8-0 to increase his personal record to 13-2 on the year. No. 2 Hewitt Engram and No. 3 Ben Herus ka displayed some serious tennis skill as well. Eitgram defeated Ryker Helms, while Heruska made waste of Rod ney Alexander. "My top three guys are playing really well for us right now." Shermeta said. "Arendell Carlton. Hewitt Engram and Ben Heruska are playing really, really well right now." Hamilton Engram. Ryan Bernthal. Mike Orr. Jeffrey Schlosser, Evan Collins. Alex Kintner, Cullen Clark and Greg Webb also put in respectable performances dur ing the match. The Demons won all of their singles and doubles matches. The county's only unbeaten team looks like it's ready to make a run at the championship. Shermeta says that his confidence is very high right now. "As far as the conference tournament, my confidence is really high." Shermeta said. "As far as the state level play offs. I don't know. He doesn't win every tournament he enters - only the majority of them. With that said, that's one of the reasons why fans are SO shocked when Tiger doesn't finish on top. As I said about two weeks ago, "I'm going to watch the Masters on television and watch Tiger make history." Well. I did watch history in the making, but the history that was made was by Mike Weir, the first left-handed golfer to win the Masters. I spent the majority of the weekend watching golf on tel evision. I think I may give Tiger had luck. Every time I want to catch history in the making and view a Tiger match, he loses. Sure, no one said that he couldn't be beat en. But I at least wanted to.see him battle it out with Weir in the end. and not Len Mattiace, who's also a lefty, but he plays with his right hand. Oh yeah, he's also a former Demon Deacon.
