Revival means life changes I Lesson Scripture: Nehemi ah 10:28-39 Lesson aims: to recognize the need for continual revival, to understand that revival means life changes, and to give God our very best. Background: The revival from last week continued. Hear ing God's word convicted them of their sins and brought, hope at the same time. On the 24th day of Tishri (the seventh month), they dressed themselves in sackcloth with dust on their heads and fasted. This signifies anguish and repentance. Confessing their sins along with the sins of their fathers, they separate from the foreign ers (neighbors). Chapter 9:5-37 recorded their liturgy of wor ship. "The liturgy involved identi fying sin and affirming God's righteousness in His dealings with them" ("Richards' Com plete Bible Handbook"). They decided to make a binding agreement swearing their identi ty and service to God. Chapter 10:1 -27 listed all of the political and religious leaders who signed it. Lesson: Not only do the leaders sign it but the people take an oath to keep it as well. If not kept, they place themselves under God's curse. Nethinims in verse 28 means "temple ser vants. (Research didn't yield much on them.) The revival isn't just emotional but it is life altering. Their sincerity leads them to examine daily practices, which take them away from God. That self-search (also col lective) yields three areas for them to address. First, their rela tionships must change. They separate from their foreign mar riage partners and end the prac tice for their children. Deuteronomy 7:3-4 forbids that in the First place. Second, they will go back to keeping the Sabbath holy. No business will be transacted! This special day is set aside by God to commemorate His bless ings and deliverance. Behavior on the Sabbath Day should not look like the other days. This day of no work will be adhered to along with the practice of the Sabbatical Year (seventh). Read Exodus 20:10-11, 23:11-12, 31:15-17 and Leviticus 25:2-7. Finally, the temple, the offerings, the Levites and the priests need to be cared for. Their vow to do so includes promises to give their time, tal ents. tithes, and first fruits (first bom of the herds) to the house of God. They will cheerfully render whatever is needed to support the work. Application: What more needs to be said? if we are truly revived, our lifestyle must change. Within the process, our commitment deepens. From the choir stand, through the pulpit, to the front door there must be a fire on the inside that moves on the outside to greater heights, not for praise of us but to give God glory! Are you giving your best to Him? He gave us His! Mildred Peppers 0 Sunday School Lesson St. Mark youths to hold back-to-school Jubilee SPECIAL TO THI CHRONICU Rev. Thalafaferro A.
