The Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority Inc., under the lead
ership of National President
Linda M. White, conducted its
2003 Leadership Seminar July
9-13 in Las Vegas. Nev.. al the
Paris Holel. Seventeen mem
bers of the Phi Omega Chap
ter. Winston-Salem, led by
their basileus. Susie B. Nance,
were among the record-break
jng numbers of more than
3,000 sorors wK? caught the
AKA "Spirit of Leadership."
Numerous workshops were
available. This was the time to
learn new information, experi
ence new resources, actively
network, mingle with other
sorors and refresh one's
knowledge to return to chap
ters invigorated and ready to
be of service to mankind.
Eight Phi Omega sorors
completed the graduate advis
er recertification process.
These sorors participated in
the graduation activities:
Maurice Jackson. Annette
Wilson. Malinda Jowers,
Monica Johnson, Irma
Richardson, Priscilla Green.
Wendy Campbell and Iman
Moore.
Ed Gordon of Black Enter
tainment Television was the
keynote speaker for the Alpha
Kappa Alpha Educational
Advancement "Salute to
Excellence" Luncheon.
Phi Omega was extremely
excited to have three sorors
actively participate in the
National Leadership Seminar.
Dr. Barbara K. Phillips, past
national president, was the
keynote speaker for the ecu
menical service. She chal
lenged sorors to examine the
length and depth of their own
chains. Sharonda McMurray
and Veronica Walton served as
presenters for the workshop
"Leadership Through Mentor
ing."
Other sorors in attendance
at the seminar were Constance
Holland, Alma Joyce, Allison
Ashe-Card, Lynette Hawkins
and Mavis Lloyd. Phi Omega
sorors came home with many
strategies to continue
strengthening the great sister
hood that began in 1908.

Sorority sponsors cancer awareness seminar

Rho Zeta Chapter, Zeta
Phi Beta Sorority Inc. and its
Amicae auxiliary group
sponsored a health/wellness
seminar for women June 21.
The event was held in F.L.
Atkins Building, Winston
Salem State University. Com
munity members attended the
seminar along with members
of the sorority and the Ami
cae.
The seminar featured the
sorority's new national pro
gram, Z-HOPE, which stands
for Zetas Helping Other Peo
ple Excel (through mind,
body and spirit}. The national
program was initiated by the
recently elected international
grand president, Barbara C.
Moore. One of the primary
goals of Z-HOPE is to
enhance, cultivate and
empower participants to
develop health-promoting
lifestyle choices in all stages
of life. The five major popu
lations are women, youths,
seniors, men and internation
al women.
Topics covered during the
seminar included breast and
cervical cancer and colorec
tal cancer.
Audrey Bell-Farrow,
B.S., M B.A., M.H.A., is
assistant director, clinical
research management, Com
prehensive Cancer Center at
Wake Forest University. Bell
Farrow's PowerPoint presen
tation on colorectal cancer
provided information on
symptoms, prevention, risk
factors, screening, treatment,
follow-up, availability of
information and clinical tri
als.
Jackie Davis Boggs, R.N..
B.S.N., is communicable dis
ease nursing supervisor for
Forsyth, director of Woman
Wise and Cervical Cancer
Control Program. Boggs'
presentation centered around
prevention, statistics, risk
factors and types of breast
and cervical cancer.
Both speakers shared
information that was
resourceful, interesting and
thought-provoking. Many
helpful handouts were dis
tributed to the participants.
The audience was given
opportunity to ask questions
and make comments.
Evaluation of the seminar
indicated that the majority of
the information presented
was excellent as well as
interesting, enjoyable and
enlightening. Door prizes and
refreshments were available
during the seminar.
