Hanner, Jr., Vance Cabiness and Bob Phillips, Jr. Psi Phi Omegas announce 2007 award recipients SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The members of Psi Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. held their annual Achievement Week program on Nov. 14. The program recognized the exceptional service of ten Omega Men. The awardees have excelled in service to their fraternity and the com munity during 2007 in areas ranging from education to helping clothe the homeless. The Achievement Week committee was faced with the arduous task' of voting on brothers recommended by the chapter at large for special recognition. This year's committee was chaired by Brother Donnie Holt, and consisted of 15 chapter members. The Honorable Allen Joines, Mayor of Winston Salem, proclaimed the week of November 12 through 18 as National Achievement Week for Psi Phi Chapter. The Mayor presented Basileus Gregory Bradsher with the proclamation during the awards ceremony at SciWorks Science Center. The presentation of awards was presided over by Brother Donald Spencer. Each recipi ent was introduced with brief remarks concerning their accomplishments and the cri teria that must be met for con sideration. The Manhood Award was presented to Brother Vance Cabiness in accordance with his spirit of reliability, respon sibility and committed service to the chapter's fundraising endeavors. The Scholarship Award was presented to Brother Donnie Holt, who created a program to help curb the dropout rate and mentor young men in the Lexington City School system. Brother Eglon Bailey and Brother Clark G. Hanner, Jr. received the Perseverance Award. The fact that two brothers were selected to be recognized in this category is indicative of the difficult task the committee encountered during the voting process. A representative said that perse verance is essential to the very nature of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and that with out it, they would accomplish very little as an organization. Brother Bailey and Brother Mayor Allen Joints presents an honor to Basileus Greg Bradsher. Hanner met with personal tri als and tribulations this year, but they endured when others may have succumbed. The Uplift Award was pre sented to the brother who has the ability to encourage others as well as improve their qual ity of life socially, economi cally and spiritually. This year's recipient was Brother Linwood Jerald, Jr. Brother Jerald has been an instrumen tal force in the character building process of many young men and women that have had the benefit of his commitment to high school athletics and academics. The Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Brother Cedric L. Russell. Brother Russell has been a stalwart for the fraternity, the community, his family and his church. He has been described as one of those brothers that always seem to be where he is needed when he is needed. The Founders Award was earned by Brother Emory Jones. He has exemplified the true essence of what it means to be an Omega. He remem bers the oath he took upon his induction into the organiza tion and he not only lives that oath, but challenges his broth ers to do likewise. The Superior Service Award was earned by Brother Keith Vereen. His work on various committees through out the year was commend able. The Clark S. Brown, Sr. Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Brother Bob Phillips, Jr. He was recog nized for his selfless service to the fraternity since his induction into Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. in 1949 and his lifetime of accomplishments academically as well as pro fessionally. The chapter rarely identifies a brother that possesses the attributes that deem him worthy of this pres tigious award and Brother Phillips was a unanimous selection this year. The Omega Man of the Year award recipient was Brother Charles E. Hairston. Brother Hairston was identi fied as having served his fra ternity and community through volunteerism and leadership qualities beyond the scope of his normal duties. A special award of recog nition was presented to Basileus Greg Bradsher denoting his outstanding lead ership in the chapter. The members of the Psi Phi Chapter and the Achievement Week Committee expressed their thanks to the mayor and the community for coming out and sharing in their endeavor.
