Psi Phi Omegas announce 2007 award recipients
SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE
The members of Psi Phi
Chapter of Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity Inc. held their
annual Achievement Week
program on Nov. 14.
The program recognized
the exceptional service of ten
Omega Men. The awardees
have excelled in service to
their fraternity and the com
munity during 2007 in areas
ranging from education to
helping clothe the homeless.
The Achievement Week
committee was faced with the
arduous task' of voting on
brothers recommended by the
chapter at large for special
recognition.
This year's committee was
chaired by Brother Donnie
Holt, and consisted of 15
chapter members.
The Honorable Allen
Joines, Mayor of Winston
Salem, proclaimed the week
of November 12 through 18 as
National Achievement Week
for Psi Phi Chapter. The
Mayor presented Basileus
Gregory Bradsher with the
proclamation during the
awards ceremony at SciWorks
Science Center.
The presentation of awards
was presided over by Brother
Donald Spencer. Each recipi
ent was introduced with brief
remarks concerning their
accomplishments and the cri
teria that must be met for con
sideration.
The Manhood Award was
presented to Brother Vance
Cabiness in accordance with
his spirit of reliability, respon
sibility and committed service
to the chapter's fundraising
endeavors.
The Scholarship Award
was presented to Brother
Donnie Holt, who created a
program to help curb the
dropout rate and mentor
young men in the Lexington
City School system.
Brother Eglon Bailey and
Brother Clark G. Hanner, Jr.
received the Perseverance
Award. The fact that two
brothers were selected to be
recognized in this category is
indicative of the difficult task
the committee encountered
during the voting process. A
representative said that perse
verance is essential to the
very nature of Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity Inc. and that with
out it, they would accomplish
very little as an organization.
Brother Bailey and Brother
Mayor Allen Joints presents an honor to Basileus Greg
Bradsher.
Hanner met with personal tri
als and tribulations this year,
but they endured when others
may have succumbed.
The Uplift Award was pre
sented to the brother who has
the ability to encourage others
as well as improve their qual
ity of life socially, economi
cally and spiritually. This
year's recipient was Brother
Linwood Jerald, Jr. Brother
Jerald has been an instrumen
tal force in the character
building process of many
young men and women that
have had the benefit of his
commitment to high school
athletics and academics.
The Citizen of the Year
Award was presented to
Brother Cedric L. Russell.
Brother Russell has been a
stalwart for the fraternity, the
community, his family and his
church. He has been
described as one of those
brothers that always seem to
be where he is needed when
he is needed.
The Founders Award was
earned by Brother Emory
Jones. He has exemplified the
true essence of what it means
to be an Omega. He remem
bers the oath he took upon his
induction into the organiza
tion and he not only lives that
oath, but challenges his broth
ers to do likewise.
The Superior Service
Award was earned by Brother
Keith Vereen. His work on
various committees through
out the year was commend
able.
The Clark S. Brown, Sr.
Lifetime Achievement Award
was presented to Brother Bob
Phillips, Jr. He was recog
nized for his selfless service
to the fraternity since his
induction into Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity Inc. in 1949 and his
lifetime of accomplishments
academically as well as pro
fessionally. The chapter
rarely identifies a brother that
possesses the attributes that
deem him worthy of this pres
tigious award and Brother
Phillips was a unanimous
selection this year.
The Omega Man of the
Year award recipient was
Brother Charles E. Hairston.
Brother Hairston was identi
fied as having served his fra
ternity and community
through volunteerism and
leadership qualities beyond
the scope of his normal duties.
A special award of recog
nition was presented to
Basileus Greg Bradsher
denoting his outstanding lead
ership in the chapter. The
members of the Psi Phi
Chapter and the Achievement
Week Committee expressed
their thanks to the mayor and
the community for coming out
and sharing in their endeavor.
