ed in death by his

Juanita Carpenter;
an aunt, Deborah
Lynn carpenter, and an uncle, Johnny
Carpenter. He leaves to cherish his
memory a loving son, Jaden Brown; his
mother, Diane Carpenter, a sister,
Shaunita Carpenter; a devoted twin
brother, Kedrick Carpenter, all of
Winston-Salem; a devoted girlfriend,
Rochelle Barnes; two uncles, Jimmy
Carpenter of Winston-Salem, and Eric
Carpenter of Charlotte; three aunts,
Louise Rowland, Catherine Carpenter,
and Edna Tonence; a nephew and two
nieces; a devoted cousin, Chris Leak; a
play brother, Terry Law; and a host of
other relatives and friends.

Willie C. Cuthrell Sr., known to
many "as "Gitt," 75, of 1764 Carriage
Cove Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C.
passed away April 22 at his residence.
He was bom August 6, 1932 in Forsyth
County to Claude
Monroe Cuthrell
and Bemice Blair
Cuthrell. Willie
was preceded in
death by his wife,
Eva H. Cuthrell and
his daughter,
Leticha Cuthrell
Coleman. He is
survived by his son,
Deacon Willie (Belinda) Cuthrell, Jr.;
and daughters. Evangelist La Wanda
(Johnny III) Parms and First Lady
Michelle (Pastor Tony Sr.) Neal all of
Winston-Salem. Funeral services were
held at 2 p.m. April 26 at Greater Faith
Church of Lexington.

FORD
God dispatched His precious angels
to escort Antoinette LaVem'e Ford, 58,
from her earthly life to rest in her new
heavenly home on Tuesday, April 22,
from the Wake Forest University
Baptist Medical Center.
She was born on January 31, 1950,
to James A. Smith, Sr., and Doris Carter
Smith.
Her early years of education were in
Amberg, Germany. Her father was in
the Armed Forces, stationed
there. Returning to the States, La Verne
attended the local public schools and
Forsyth Technical Community College.
Ford was a member of
Uncompromising Word Fellowship
Church with the Rev. Bobbie Jones.
She was preceded in death by her
father; her son, Juan Antonio Ford; and
her sister, Sherrie Annette Smith.
Cherishing fond memories of her
are her devoted mother, Doris
Williams; two daughters, Trina Ford
and Doris Felicia Landrum (Kenneth);
two sisters, E. Denise Campbell
(Willie) and Lisa Y. Gray (Maurice);
two brothers, James A. Smith, Jr., and
Ken Smith (Geraldine); a devoted aunt,
Bobbie Payne; five grandchildren.
Porshe Ford, Perry Kirksey, Jr., Jajuana
Moore, Robert Colvin, Jr., and Anjile
Ford; one great-grandchild, Jajuan
Moore; and a host of many nieces,
nephews, cousins, other relatives and
friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:30
a.m. April 28 from the First
Waughtown Baptist Church. Pastor
Dennis Bishop officiated. Interment
followed in Evergreen Cemetery.

crown in glory to gain. The battle for
me is over and the victory has been

Armenthia "Ment" Denise Gilreath
of 1532 E 21st St., Winston-Salem.
N.C. departed this life on April 20 at
Forsyth Medical Center following an
extended period of illness. She was
bom October 23. 1952 to Allen and
Ethel Gilreath both of whom preceded
her in death. She was a faithful mem
ber of Spencer Memorial Christian
Church, where she served in many
roles. As a young adult she was a mem
ber of the James A. Brown Junior choir
and the Usher Board under the leader
ship of Pastor John W. Mack. Later she
assisted with the children's choir, and
drove the church
van in an effort to
bring all to Christ.
She served in a
capacity that s*he
loved most, feeding
the hungry which
led her to be head
of the kitchen hos
pitality staff.
Gilreath was a
graduate of Atkins High School Class
of 1971 and a former employee of the
WSFCS System until her failing health.
She leaves to cherish her memories
one son, Touron Gilreath of the home;
two sisters, Gloria Moore and Celeste
Gilreath both of Winston-Salem; one
grandson. Antawan Frazier; and a host
of nieces, nephews, cousins, a god
daughter, Fredrinna Miller; and a
devoted friend, Daisy Chambers.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m.
April 24 from the Spencer Memorial
Christian Church. Interment followed
in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The
family would like to give special thanks
to the Cancer Unit at Forsyth Medical
Center for the exceptional care that

LEWIS
The Rev. Henry S. Lewis Jr. died on
April 25 at the age of 72. He was bom
on Sept. 26. 1935, in Lowrys, S.C., the
first born son of the late Henry S. Lewis
Sr. and Marie Sanders Lewis. He spent
his early childhood years in Siler City.
At the age of 11, he and his family
moved to Winston-Salem. Lewis was a
graduate of Atkins High School, Class
of 1953. He received a bachelor's
degree from Winston-Salem State
University and a master of divinity
degree from Andover Newton
Theological School in Newton Centre,
Mass. From 1969 to 1977, he was the
university chaplain and James A. Gray
professor of religion and sociology at
Winston-Salem State University. While
continuing at
WSSU, from 1966
to A&77, he served
as pastor of Mount
Pleasant Baptist
Church in Winston
Salem. In 1977, the
Rev. Lewis joined
the employ
ee/pastoral counsel
ing staff at RJ.
Reynolds Tobacco
Co. He retired from KJK in 2UUU after
23 years of service. From 1992 to 2002,
he served as pastor of Went? Memorial
Congregational Church in Winston
Salem. Lewis was a licensed marital
and family therapist.
He was a member of the American
Association for Marital and Family
Therapy, and the National Institute for
Business and Industrial Chaplaincy,
where he served on the Board of
Directors as secretary. In addition, he
was a member of the organizing Board
of Directors of Experiment in Self
Reliance Inc., a local anti-poverty
organization. He also served as a
human relations consultant to the
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County
Schools when the school system was
integrated by court order. Rev. Lewis
was a member of the Board of
Directors and past president of the
Society for the Study of Afro- American
History in Winston-Salem/Forsyth
County. During his tenure as president,
the Society published a book entitled,
African Americans in Winston
Salem/Forsyth County - A Pictorial
History. Beginning in 1977, Lewis was
listed in Who's Who Among Black
Americans and Who's Who in
Religion. In 1991, he received the
Winston-Salem Chronicle's Lifetime
Service Award.
He is survived by his wife of 49
years, Savannah Winstead Lewis, a
native of Roxboro; and their four chil
dren, Robin Anita Lewis of Winston
Salem; attorney Kenneth Winstead
Lewis of Chapel Hill, his wife. Holly
Ewell Lewis, and their three children.
Evan Jordan Lewis, Marshall Henry
Ewell Lewis and Maya Amelia Lewis;
Dr. Jonathan Henry Lewis of Chandler.
Ariz., hjs wife, Cheryl Bruton Lewis,
and their son, Joshua' Winstead Lewis;

Pleasant Baptist Church. Rev.
