Older Americans Month was
established in 1963. At that time,
only 17 million living Americans
were 65 years of age or older. In
1963, approximately one third of
older Americans lived in poverty
and programs to meet their needs
were very limited. President John
F. Kennedy met with the National
Council of Senior Citizens and
designated the month of May as
"Senior Citizens Month." In
1980, President Jimmy Carter
changed the name from "Senior
Citizens Month" to "Older
Americans Month," and the cus
torn continues.
The theme for Older
Americans Month 2008 is
"Working Together for Strong,
Healthy, and Supportive
Communities."
