Choristers will perform at Carver alumni event Sunday SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE ^ The Twin City Choristers, an all male per forming choral group, will perform a concert at Carver High School, located at 3545 Carver School Rd. on Sunday, May 18, at 4 p.m. The concert is sponsored by the Carver High School Alumni Association. Tickets for the event are $10. The Choristers were organized in 1957 by Dr. Dunston, who had been urged by Dr. A. L. Cromwell, a prominent Winston-Salem dentist and musician, to pursue her dream of organiz ing an all male chorus. Cromwell had directed a similar group of men called the Twin City Glee Club in the early 1920's. Following his advice, in September of 1937, Dr. Dunston founded and organized the Twin City Choristers and served as the group's "first music director. The Choristers have performed in church es, schools and concert halls in and around Winston-Salem, and throughout North Carolina. They have done concert tours to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut. As members of the mainstream arts com munity in Winston-Salem, The Choristers have , participated in concerts with the Winston Salem Symphony, the Piedmont Chamber Singers, and Winston-Salem State University. The Choristers currently have two CDs or , the market. "Reflections" was recorded in 2004 and "Christmas With The Twin City Choristers," was recorded in 2005. Patterson Award, for their support for UNCF member colleges and for Denzel Washington's recent film, "The Great Debaters," about the history of Wiley College. The winner of the Miss National UNCF crown is determined by the amount raised by students at UNCF member colleges and univer sities. This year, under Lawton's leadership, students from Wiley College raised a total of $82,076 for UNCF. Lawton was crowned Miss National UNCF at the annual joint conference of the UNCF National Alumni Council (NAC) and its subsidiary organization, the UNCF National Pre-Alumni Council (NPAC), which was held in Montgomery, AL on Feb. 13 17. Lawton will serve as an official UNCF representative at national events, including An Evening of Stars, the annual UNCF national televi sion special. Additionally, she will attend regional UNCF events such as the Chicago Black & White Black Ball, the Atlanta Mayor's Masked Ball, the Indianapolis Classic, the Maya Angelou Women Who Lead Luncheon in Charlotte, and other events' throughout the year. Members of NPAC elected Chrishele I. Kingdom as incoming president. Kingdom, a junior at UNCF member institution Claflin University in Orangeburg, S.C., will be responsible for organizing NPAC confer ences, developing fundraising strategies "and helping to keep NPAC active on the campuses of UNCF's 39 member col leges and universities. David Miller was elected NAC President and Dr. Rubye Taylor-Drake is the Immediate Past NAC President.
