This funding supported programs - and investments defined as community benefits by the N.C. Hospital Association and the N.C. Medical Care Commission. The total represents the contributions of both Wake Forest University Health Sciences/School of Medicin'e and North Carolina Baptist Hospital. We give in many ways - making outright donations, providing free clinics and medical services, offering needed services that cannot cover costs through charges, and subsidizing the training of health care professionals. From looking for better ways to ensure the health of our children, to caring for our most vulnerable community members, it is our mission to improve our community's health and well-being. community giving WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY BAPTIST MEDICAL CENTER, JULY 2006 - JUNE 2007 CASH DONATIONS IN-KIND DONATIONS & NON-BILLED SERVICES (Free clinics, patient education, screenings, support groups, outreach) SUBSIDIZED COMMUNITY SERVICES (Downtown Health Plaza, Hospice, Medication assistance, etc.) TOTAL CHARITY CARE COST* (Excludes any cost associated with bad debt) NON-REIMBURSED COST OF MEDICARE TREATMENT NON-REIMBURSED COST OF MEDICAID TREATMENT NON-REIMBURSED MEDICAL EDUCATION/ RESEARCH COSTS TOTAL (Fiscal Year July 2006 - June 2007) NCBH $ 237,456 $ 1,451,562 ? $12,153,869 $12,128,130' $23,386,428 $ 3,501,468 $32,729,409 $85,588,322 WFUHS $ 163,851 $ 908,707 $ 178,000 $ 9,342,260 NA ? The result is a burden of bad debt that the public often considers as part of charity care; however, guidelines for reporting community benefits exclude bad debt. N. C. Baptist Hospital spent in FY 07 $31. J million to treat patients who were unwilling or unable to pay for services and who did not seek charity care. More than 55,000 patient visits were recorded last year alone at the Downtown Health Plaza, where costs for quality preventive and specialty cSre were subsidized with a $10.5 million investment by the hospital. Patient visits increased by nearly 3,000 over the previous year. Many of these patients are our community's working poor who are uninsured and rely on this service for affordable, quality care. To pay for this care and the many other hospital services for which we are not fully reimbursed, the Medical Center continually pursues improved efficiency, cost-containment and strategic growth. training is substantially subsidized by the school and hospital.
