Back-to- School giveaway at Sims M't C IALTO THE CHRONIC I t The William C. Sims. Sr. Recreation Center and the Tiny Rams Football organization will host the 13th Annual Back to School Give- Away program for children 5 - 16 on Friday, Aug. 15 from 5-8 p.m. at the center. Program Organizer and Center Supervisor Ben Piggott says that the event has been blessed to get these sponsors: Big Daddy's Heating and Air, Ben Long's Kentucky Soul Food, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. of the Delta Sigma Chapter, Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks Department, 97.1 WQMG, Happy Hill Senior Citizens Club, St Paul Holiness Church, Home Moravian Church, Tiny Rams Football and Sarge and Sons. At the event, Beverly McFadden will perform spoken word poetry . There will also be a registration for Tiny Rams foot ball and a hot dog giveaway pro vided by Ben Long's Kentucky Soul Food. All children who come for free school supplies or football registration must have a parent or guardian with them. The center is at 1201 Alder Street in Happy Hill W-S Asst. Rock the Block seeks volunteers and vendors Event will be Sept. 19 SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE O The organizers of Rock the Block, the city's annual end-of-summer downtown street festival, are looking for volunteers and' are accepting applications from merchan dise vendors interested in having a booth at the event. This year's Rock the Block is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 19, from 6 p.m. to mid night. Volunteers are needed to help set up Friday afternoon and tear down after the event. During the festival, volun teers are needed to staff the children's area and merchan dise and soda stands, and assist at the mechanical bull, the BMX stunt show and the inflatables. All volunteers, will receive a free "Rock the Block Volunteer" t-shirt. Vendor applications are being accepted for all non food booths. The deadline for food vendors has already passed. Animal art bidding has started SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Throughout the day on Friday, August 8, officials at Art Unleashed ? the public exhibition project that has brought beautiful puppy and cat sculptures to Winston Salem ? were slated to get a rigorous upper-body workout as they clean, groom and load onto a truck all of the whimsi cal puppies and cats that have decorated the city since April. The exquisite canines and felines will now be auctioned to benefit the Forsyth Humane Society. Online bidding for adopt ing the ptfppies and kitties has begun at www.fhs-artun leashed.org. Bidding will con tinue until Aug. 18. The sculp tures won't be available Dfor buying at that time; instead, the ending bid for each statue on the Web site will become the opening bid at public auc tions to be held at the Wachovia Center on Aug. 23. Battle has announced the appointment of Dr. Deborah J. Callaway as special assistant to the chancellor at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. - "Dr. Deborah Callaway is an exemplary administrator who will provide strong sup port to the Office of the Chancellor and North Carolina A&T," said Dr. Battle. "Her experience, lead ership abilities and overall knowl edge ot the uni versity ' will be invalu able assets in her role as spe c i a 1 Battle a S S i S ' tant." The special assistant to the chancellor functions as a sen ior officer to the chancellor and serves on the chancellor's executive cabinet to meet increased demands of aca demic and administrative leadership of the university. The special assistant supports the chancellor in the design, development and implementa tion of all academic programs Hence, this position provides an academic presence in the Office of the Chancellor as it relates to campus initiatives. Callaway has over 26 years of experience in higher education and athletics. Since 1985, she has worked at A&T in a variety of administrative roles including chair of the" department of human per formance and leisure studies in the School of Education, interim athletics director and senior woman administrator for female athletics. She was named Outstanding Administrator of the Year in 2002, and during academic year 2007-08, she served as interim dean of the School of Education. During her career* Callaway has served on numerous campus, state and national accreditation, plan ning, expansion, search and promotion committees. Prior to working at A&T, Callaway was chair of the physical edu cation department at Barber Scotia College in Concord.
