In his Oct. 7 debate with Democrat Barack Obama, McCain referred to his rival for the White House as "That One!" His comment angered many Obama sup porters who viewed it as disrespectful. This supporter , though, is using McCain's words to advertise his support for Obama. The "That One" magnetized stickers are the brainchild of local graphic arts company , Signs Limited. Veterans Day Parade to be held a few days before the federal holiday CHRONICLE STAFF REPORT The Winston-Salem Veterans Day Parade will be held a little earlier this year. Charlie Claybourn of the Forsyth County Veterans Council said the parade will be held on Saturday, Nov. 8 instead of 011 Veterans Day, Nov. 11. "In order to max imize parade partici pation at this patriot ic time of year, we had to adjust our schedule," Clayboum said. He added that many of the partici pants, including ROTC units and bands t have other commitments at that time. "We are delighted with our line-up and we cordially invite all residents to come out and honor the thousands of Forsyth County veterans who have served our nation proudly." The parade will start at 10 ajn. at the comer of Spring and Fourth streets and proceed through downtown on Fourth Street. It will include 51 floats, marching units, and 10 area high school bands. Area veterans groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, local political leaders, police-fire-and EMS units as well as military floats, a U.S. Navy submarine/ torpedo bus and a Cobra helicopter will also be apart of the action. The Parade Grand Marshall will be Retired USMC Sgt. First Class Jud Lamphear, a Marine Corp combat veteran and the current command er of American Legion Post 55 in Winston Salem. Following the parade, a brief veterans trib ute ceremony will be held at American Legion Post 55, 111 Miller St. near Baptist Hospital. It will include a speech by Commander Lamphear and the presentation of the President's Veterans Day Proclamation by local Veterans Administration officials. ? Gang awareness rally planned The Black Political Awareness League will have its Second Annual Gang Awareness Prevention Rally an Saturday, Oct. 18 at noon at Blum Park on 25th Street. The rally's designed to raise awareness of gang activ ity in local schools, neighbor hoods and the city as a whole. Mayor Joines has issued a proclamation making October 18, 2008 "Gang Prevention ind Awareness Day" in Winston-Salem. Church leaders, communi ty organizations city officials, police representatives and school administrators are slat ed to be on hand. The public is encouraged to join them to show their support, ask ques tions and ponder solutions. Donations requested to benefit kids The Wake Forest University School of Law Domestic Violence Advocacy Center (DVAC), the Wake Forest University School of Medicine Women '* Health Center of Excellence for Research, Leadership, Education (WHCoE), Project Night Night and Krankie's Coffee is helping homeless children have sweeter dreams! DVAC and WHCoE will be collecting baby or child-sized blankets, new or "like new" children's books and stuffed animals which will be assembled into tote bags by Project Night Night (www.projectnighmight.org ) and presented to the children of domestic violence victims at the Family Services Shelter. The community drive will be held on Friday, Oct. 24 from 7-11 a.m. at Krankie's Coffee, 1208 Reynolda Rd. (look for the Airstream trailer across from the Children's Home). Glenn alumnus completes basic training Air Force Airman Eric W. Stevenson has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization. ana military Stevenson customs and curtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special rraining in human relations In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Christine Stevenson of Willie Craig Road, B as sett, Va., and nephew of Delinda Stevenson of Kemersville. Stevenson is a 2007 grad uate of Glenn High School. Burr-sponsored health bill signed by President Bash U.S. Senator Richard Burr (R-North Carolina) last week applauded the President's signing of H.R. 1343, the Health Centers Renewal Act of 2008.
