Event to help fund
a Yellowjacket Wall

BY ANTHONY HILL
THE CHRONICLE
There's no question that
Carver High School has a
rich athletic tradition, dating
back to the 1950s. Some for
mer Yellowjackets have
gone on to
profes

greatness
? both on
and off
the fields
of play.

Pot
Aaron Bailey thought some
of those former
Yellowjackets should be
remembered and honored at
the school. So, he began to
contemplate how the school
could recognize those spe
cial people.
"We thought about a hall
of fame," Bailey said. "But
several schools have some
thing like that. Besides, the
Winston-Salem Sportsmen
Club does a wonderful job
with the official hall of fame
of the city. But we did
decide that coming up with a
Wall of Fame would be
good."
"We want to ptf up the
pictures of some of the for
mer athletes that played
here," Bailey continued.
"The younger student-ath
letes can actually see the
faces of some of the older
guys that they may or may
not have heard about. I
thought that hosting an
annual basketball classic
could help fund our efforts
toward that each year. This
basketball classic will help
fund the enshrinement."
Carver athletic director
Alfred Poe added: "I think
that's a great idea. I told
Aaron that I thought it was a
great idea when he brought
it to my attention. That will
give us a chance to recog
nize some of the former
players that made Carver
what it is today. Carver
wouldn't be Carver without
them. The games should be

North's Marvin Young rejects a CJ. Brinson lay-up attempt. The Vikings JV squad defeat

TURNS BACK W-S PREP

BY ANTHONY HILL
THE CHRONICLE
It was a classic war of attrition when the
Winston-Salem Prep JV boy's squad (2-1)
took a trip to North Forsyth on Tuesday
evening. The Vikings (2-0) outlasted the
Phoenix to pick up a 67-62 victory during
the JV Game of the Week.
Both squads had a tough time connecting
with field goals most of the game. Both
teams also seemed to wear each other down
with stout defense. It was the play of North's
Trenton Coles that opened things up for
North Forsyth ? especially in the second
half. Coles finished with 27 points with lim
ited playing time. Marvin Young also pro
viaea a spanc ror me viKing onense in me
second half. Young finished with 14 points.
"Trent and Marvin are two of my best
slashers," said North head JV coach Derrele
Mitchell. "I feel really good about them.
Trent came in and did his job. He's a shoot
er. But I also told him they were looking for
him to shoot. So, pump fake it and drive it
sometime. He did what he was s&pposed to
do. He hit some big shots. Mavin came
through big for us late in the game. I expect
big things from those guys."
It seemed like Winston-Salem Prep,
coached by Mario Price, was ready to take
control of the game for most of the second
and third quarter. Winston-Salem Prep's
Bobby Scrivens (11 points), Brandon Fair
(21 points) and C.J. Brinson (10 points)
made things interesting in the second half.
Scrivens and Fair did most of their damage
from the charity stripe, while Brinson put a
dent in the Viking defense with his quick
penetration. Prep also seemed to take the
North onense out ot its comrort zone during
the latter portion of the third quarter.
Mitchell couldn't help but shake his head as
he watched his squad turn the ball over
numerous times in the third quarter.

Former NFL player Richard Collier is showing great
strength after tragedy. He was shot 14 times on Sept. 2.
Paralyzed Collier
shows true strength
Can you believe New
York Giants,, wide out
Plaxico Burress? I mean,
how did he allow his own
gun to shoot himself while
he was at a New York club
over the weekend. I'm sure
most of you have heard
about that.
Why wasn't the gun on
safety? Why wasn't his gun
registered. Those were some
of the things I was thinking
about while talking about
this issue
with the
radio host of
a South
Carolina
sports talk
show over
the week
end. A lot
people that
called said
that Burress
is basically
done. Well, I
don't know
about that.
What I do know is that
he's lucky that nothing
worse happen to him.
Burress is lucky that he only
gave himself a minor injury.
Most importantly, he's,
blessed that the gunshot did
n't come from a crazy local.
That was the case for former
Jacksonville Jaguars line
man, Richard Collier.
I was reading a story on
him in the Orlando Sentinel
earlier this week that really
showed me how strong he
really is. ESPN is supposed
to have a special on Collier
on "Outside the Lines," on
Sunday. In the story, it
talked about how Collier,
remembered everything that

happen during that tragic f
night he was shot 14 times.
He also talked about remem
bering everything, and not
really knowing how serious
his injuria were until he
heard doctors counting bul
lets.
Can you believe that?
Wow. In case you're not too
familiar with Collier's inci
dent, he was shot numerous
times on Sept. 2 by some
guy that police say was
retaliating
against Collier
from some
thing that hap
pened back in
April. He's
now paralyzed
from the waist
down. He also
had his left leg
amputated
belowvthe knee
in October. I
still think it's
odd that
Collier s former teammate,
Kenny Pettway, escaped
with no injuries. Even Suge
Knight caught a couple shots
when Tupac was fatally
shot. I'm just saying.
Anyway, Tyrone Hartsfield,
has been charged with
attempted murder. He is
scheduled to be in court on
Dec . 11, according to the
Orlando newspaper.
One of the quotes that
stuck out to me after reading
the story was what Collier
said about his strength
through all of this.
Collier told the Orlando
Sentinel: "I've always been
told I was a strong person. I
think I never really paid

Broncos Jr. Midgets win Regional title
BY JIM PRICE
SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE
"One Team-One Family,"
has been the rallying point for
the Forsyth County Broncos
Jr. Midget team all season.
Last Saturday, the boys in blue
used their motto to power past
the McAdenville Dolphins.
The Broncos won the Mid
South Region Championship
with a 25-12 win over the
Dolphins. The Broncos are
now set to take a trip to
Orlando where they will play
for the Pop Warner D-II
National Championship.
The Dolphins, were seem
ingly expecting to see
Forsyth's Billy Glenn, Jr. run
the ball over the weekend.
That was a tall order, consider
ing how talented the young
athlete is. Glenn has shined
this season on both sides of the
ball for the Broncos.
After a convincing open
ing defensive series, Glenn
caught a short pass on the sec
ond play from scrimmage and
scampered 75 yards for the
opening score for the

Broncos. The combination of
Glenn, Trashawn Davis,
Derrick Brown. Coleman
Squire and Quintin Brinkley
has made it very difficult for
opposing defenses to figure
out who is going to have a big
game from week to week. The
