Urban League Photos Guests are served a delicious Thanksgiving-style meal. Food and Thought Public housing residents enjoy holiday luncheon at the Urban League CHRONICLE STAFF REPORT Public housing residents were treated to a pre Thanksgiving feast last week, compliments of the Winston Salem Urban League and several other sponsors. The Nov. 25 Thanksgiving luncheon attracted dozens of people to the League's downtown headquarters for an after noon of food, fellowship and good advice. The League's Quality of Life Program put on the event, in partnership with the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem. St. Leo the Great Catholic Church provided most of the food, while the Les Arbres Club, or "The Tree." donated cater ing services and additional food items. Les Arbres has been owned and operated by Manuel Johnson and his wife, Mabel, in East Winston for decades. The club's chef, Norman Dunlap, prepared a delicious meal of turkey and stuffing, ham, green beans and yams with all the trimmings for the luncheon. The Department of Corrections' Forsyth Action Committee was also instrumental in staging the event, according to Urban League officials. The mission of the Urban League's Quality of Life Program is to empower the community and change lives. To that end, Greg Cox of Bank of America presented a financial literacy workshop during the luncheon. A Forsyth Technical Community College representative also made a presentation encouraging public housing residents to continue their educa tion. Motivational Speaker Morris Morrison was also on hand to encourage low-income families to persevere during these tough economic times. He delivered an inspirational presenta tion, challenging the guests to rise above their current circum stances by believing in themselves and setting goals to achieve success.
