Ladies helping fraternity with fundraising SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Psi Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. is in the process of planning its annual Mardi Gras Extravaganza Four local ladies have agreed to work alongside the brothers of the fraternity to help raise money to be used to support the fraternity's man dated social action programs. Nicole McCollum, Cynthia Christine Russell, Tammy Watson and Courtney Cheree Jackson are currently compet ing to raise the most money and earn the coveted title of Ms. Mardi Gras 2009. Each woman represents one of the four "Cardinal Principles" of the fraternity - Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift. Manhood Representative McCollum is married to Torrey McCollum and is a devoted mother to her three children. Tiffany, Nyree and Torrey Jr. She is a Relationship Banker at BB&T. Russell is the daughter of Annetta Russell Payne and Christopher W. Russell Sr. She graduated from Winston Salem State University in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Middle Grades Education. She went on to pursue her career as a Middle Grades Math Teacher. She also has a Master's Degree in School Administration from Gardner Webb University. Perseverance Representative Watson is the wife of Henry Watson and mother of 4, Tavares, Christa. Alfonzo and Marcus As Broker/Owner of ERA Piedmont Realty since January 2006, she and her associates have sold more than 53 homes. Uplift Representative Jackson is the youngest daugh ter of Johnnie and kathy Jackson. She is a graduate of Winston-Salem State University, and has volun teered her time and expertise to Habitat for Humanity, the Mayor's Fitness Club and the Red Cross. She is currently employed in the Wellness Department at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. This year's Mardi Gras ceW ebration is scheduled for Feb. 14, 2009 at 9 p.m. at the Education Building on the Dixie Classic Fairground com plex. Advance $20 tickets will be sold until Jan. 30, after that, tickets will be $30. The money raised will help to provide scholarships, boys' summer camp tuition and Thanksgiving food baskets. Holiday event will feature black Santa Claus SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The William Roscoe Anderson Recreation Center, formerly Reynolds Park Recreation Center, will hold its annual Community Day Christmas Celebration on Thursday, Dec. 1 1 from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. There will be lots of enter tainment, including singing, dancing, modeling and cheer ing. The main attraction will be an African-American Santa Claus. Parents are encouraged to bring cameras to take pic tures of their children sitting on Santa's knee. The celebration is open to the public and is free of charge. In order to help the needy, canned food donations will be accepted. The Anderson Recreation Center is located at 2450 Reynolds Park Road. Bingo for Turkeys Sims Recreation Center sponsored its 13th Annual Bingo for Turkeys on Nov. 21. Bingo games allowed sev eral local families to win a holiday turkey or ham. Families were asked to bring a canned good in order to participate. Thi cans were donated to local charities. The Center will next host its Peace Toys For War Toys event. Past NCNW leader awards members i SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Wilhelmina Long . the past immediate president of the Winston-Salem Section of the National Council of Negro Women, recently presented cer tificates of achievements to all of the out-going officers and tea captains at the Annual International Membership Tea. The recipients were First Vice President Doris Herrell; Second Vice President Norma Vincent; Third Vice President Aurelia Worthy; Secretary Jean Moses-Petree; Financial Secretary Barbara Davis Porter; Treasurer Betty Bennett; Coalition Treasurer Faye Vernon; Editor Martha Jones; Team Captain I Clara Ellis; Team Captain II Lacy Dillard; Team Captain III Martha Jones; and Team Captain IV Doris Herrell. Long congratulated her team of officers and captains for successfully carrying out the organization's annual pro grammatic thrusts, which included the International Membership Tea, Christmas Party, Youth Pageant, Harambee Breakfast, commu nity outreach to Sickle Cell Health Agency and Operation School Supplies. In 1935, noted educator and human rights activists Mary McLeod Bethune founded the National Council of Negro Women Inc. - the nation's broadest based organization of African American women. The mission of NCNW is to advance opportunities and the quality of life for African American women, their fami lies and communities. There are six sections in North Carolina which include Durham, Elizabeth City, Raleigh, Charlotte, Fayetteville and Winston-Salem. Dr. Manderline Scales is State Convener.
