Durham scores his 1,000th career point CHRONICLE STAFF REPORT All the Winston-Salem State University men's basketball team wanted for Christmas was a victory, a win that would extend their win streak to two games and Averett delivered the gifts for the Rams last Saturday at the C.E. Gaines Center. The Cougars gift-wrapped 26 turnovers as WSSU earned a hard-fought 68-55 victory against a very talented A v e r e 1 1 squad in men's col lege bas ic e t b a 1 1 action. With semester finals com pleted and a 10-day holiday layoff ahead, the Rams ben e f i t t e d from 14 points from Brian Fisher and 15 points from D i o n t a e Gibson as W S S U earned their sec ond con secutive victory to improve to 3-7 over all. The Rams ben e f i t t e d from a sea son-high four playr ers who recorded double digit point totals in the victory. Senior forward Jamal Durham chipped in with 13 points as he surpassed the 1,000 career point mark for the Rams. With 13 points Durham is the 25th player in WSSU history . to eclipse the 1000-poipt milestone as he finished the game with 1,005 career points. Brian Fisher started the contest with back-to-back three point field goals en route to helping the Rams jump start their offense in the early going as the junior guard put the Rams ahead by six points early. Undaunted the Cougars responded as Averett's Jonathan Rumley, a Winston-Salem native and 2003 graduate of Glenn High School , scored four points of his own in the first half as the Cougars trailed the Rams by only eight points, at 33-25, headed into the halftime intermission. Averett would cut the WSSU lead to as little as only one point, at 42-41 with just over 12 minutes to play in the con test, but the Rams would answer as they used a 26-8 run See Durham on B4 File photo WSSU's Jamal Durham became the 25th play er in school history to score lflOO points. a . - Photo by Anthony Hill Carver head varsity basketball coach Danny Piggott Jr., takes pride in helping kids on and off the court. Piggott more than a coach BY ANTHONY HILL THE CHRONICLE Images of whistles blowing, someone barking orders and instructing strenuous drills may come to mind when initial ly thinking about a typical varsity basketball coach. A lot of varsity coaches would probably rather simply coach than teach classes. But Carver head varsity basketball coach Danny Piggott Jr., who's also a math teacher, doesn't really fit the mold of a stereotypical basketball coach. As a matter of fact, Piggott seemingly fits more of the mold of a great teacher compared to a seasoned coach with more than 15 years of experience. He arrives at school early, and he often leaves late. Not because of basketball practice. Piggott is normally staying after school to tutor kids, even if they don't have him for math. "Danny cares about kids," said Carver athletic director Alfred Poe. "He's an excellent teacher too. He always puts the kids first before anything. He's a great asset to Carver High School. He's the type of person we need to keep here at Carver." Evidently, Piggott's peers recognized his worth in the See Piggott on B5 File photo Wake's senior safety Chip Vaughn. Squads going for Lash tourney title The 16th annual Chronicle/ Lash JV Basketball Classic will officially begin tomorrow at Carver High School. The special JV boy's tournament will be going on Friday, Saturday and Monday. Game times are 2:30, 4, 6 and 7:30 p.m. The title game will be on Monday at 7:30 p.m. In case you're not completely familiar with the tournament, it's basically the Frank Spencer for the JV guys. I always bring up the fact that CP3 (Chris Paul) came into his own during this tournament in 2000. He won the MVP that year. As a matter of fact, his father (Charles Paul) told me that's when he knew Chris was going to be special ? after watching him control things during the Lash tournament. Each year it's arguably the most exciting tourna ment ? despite the fact that two other tournaments are usually going on at the same time. This year, the Lash tourney is on the exact days as the Frank Spencer. I See Hill on B4 FROM THE HUDDLE Anthony Hill Ho! Ho! Hole-in-One PRNewsFoto/Reynolds Plantation.
