Omegas embrace social action role
SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE
November denotes a very
special time for members of
Psi Phi Chapter of Omega Psi
Phi Fraternity. In conjunction
with taking time to remember
the founders of the fraternity,
members of the chapter's
Social Action Committee
begin to organize several
efforts to provide food assis
tance during the holiday sea
son to families in need. The
committee was reminded of
the importance- of their'task
this year due to the effect the
economy has had on local
neighbors and friends.
Social Action Chairmen
Brother Mark Oliver and
Brother Kenneth Rocker
coordinated efforts to pur
chase and collect food items
to be distributed during
Thanksgiving. Brother
Oliver stated that he was
overwhelmed by the show of
support from the chapter
members and others in the
community.
The committee is also
responsible for organizing
the preparation of food bas
kets that are delivered by
members to widows of
deceased brothers and also to
some brothers who have been
sick during the year. Psi Phi
Chapter members say they
embrace the opportunity to
show their gratitude to those
that have supported their
most important endeavors
throughout the year. Basileus
John P. Card Jr. stressed the
responsibility that brothers
have to remain connected
with loved ones our deceased
brethren leave behind and to
brothers who may no longer
attend meetings due to
declining health.
The chapter also held a
gospel concert on Dec. 12 at
Shiloh Baptist Church to
raise funds for its college ?
scholarship program. The
event was well-attended, and
the contributions of those
attending helped make this
inaugural event a success.
The Basileus, on behalf of
each member, wishes to
thank everyone who per
formed and/or provided his
or her wonderful talent to
assist the chapter in this most
noteworthy endeavor.
Brother Eddie Bines was
instrumental in coordinating
the talent for this event.
The next social action
project planned by the chap
ter is its Community Action
Coat Drive. All items collect
ed will be distributed to the
homeless. In the past, this
event has experienced
tremendous support from the
community, it is the hope of
the committee that the dismal
economy will not prevent a
successful turn out this year.
