For over a century, Winston-Salem State University
has said, yes to education* .
We said, "Yes, you are worthy," to those first 25 students who attended Slater Industrial Academy in
1892, founded just 75 years after laws were passed making it a crime for blacks to learn to read and write.

persevered, triumphant in the face of numerous obstacles."
