Garden project brings students from Kimberley Park
Elementary and Wake Law together
BY TODD LUCK
THE CHRONICLE
Students and staff members at
Wake Forest University Law School
spent last Saturday morning sprucing
up Kimberley Park Elementary
School.
They joined Kimberley students,
parents and faculty for CommUNITY
Cares Day, a biannual event designed
to show students at the school that
they have support at Wake Forest and
beyond.
Law student Mike Miller helped
organize the event. It was his second
year doing it and he said he's im
pressed with all the young Kimberley
Park students who showed up to lend a
hand.
"They're really excited about mak
ing their school look better and help
ing out," said Miller. "It's 9 o'clock on
a Saturday morning and (kids) should
be watching cartoons and stuff, but
they're out helping make their school
and community a better place. (There
are) some blossoming young leaders
out there ." Most of the supplies used
were donated by area businesses, in
cluding Home Depot and Shiloh Nurs
ery.
About 60 volunteers took part,
planting bulbs and trees and cleaning
the school's grounds. A fruit and veg
etable garden was also planted.
Miller is one of many law students
who tutor at Kimberley Park as part of
Wake's Youth Advocacy Group, which
he founded. About 150 law school stu
dents make up the group, which also
provides tutoring and coaching at
Hanes Hosiery Recrecation Center.
Members of the group serve as courts
appointed representatives for children
in domestic disputes as well Miller,
who graduates in May, hopes the work
of the Youth Advocacy Group contin
ues.
Wake Law students were not the
only ones who pitched in Saturday.
