The men and the boys have some one-on~ one time in the school's media center. Real Men Mentor! Male-involvement program a huge success at Kimberley SPECIAL TO TH1 CHRONICLE To have 20 men show up for any event would be, in this day and time, considered a great turnout. However, when Kimberley Park Elementary School (KP) saw more than 40 men walk into its historic halls, there was reason to celebrate. On. Tuesday. March 17 the school hosted the First Annual Muffins, Morning Work and a Meal with my Mentor. KP has recognized the importance of the male role model in the lives of their young boys. The school noticed that ther^ has been a strong presence of men in the school over the year and decid ed to express its gratitude to them for being such a pres ence. Conversations between Dr. Amber Baker, the principal of the school, and Guidance Counselor Adeola Durotoye birthed the idea for the pro gram. The idea of recognizing the men was a spin-off from an event that Jenny Gray, the EC specialist, and James Dunbar, the home-school coordinator, had read an article about in The Chronicle. Dunbar states, "Ms. Gray actually reinforced the idea of recognizing the dads. 1 had read the article, but then she brought it to my attention that that same thing should happen here; so we started talking and planning and all of this just kind of happened." The event (Muffins, Morning Work, and a Meal with my Mentor) started with dads, mentors, and male role The pairs prepare to play a game. models eating breakfast with their male students. Afterward, each man went with his child to class to sit in on the child's morning class room routine and to provide assistance with the child's morning work. There was a mentors' gath ering in the media center that allowed the men to engage each other in conversation about the plight of men and young men in today's society. The discussion was led by Marcallus Sunday, the Parent and Male Involvement Director at Sarah Y. Austin Head Start Center. The discus sion was very moving for all the men. "The unexpected turnout, though a pleasant surprise, cre ated such an overflow that >ve found ourselves literally run ning around getting extra chairs from rooms to accom modate the crowd," Dunbar stated. Before reconvening for a meal, the men and their stu dents indulged in a bonding and team building activity. The students/mentors also partici pated in some fun activities that promoted unity among the men and the boys. With the assistance of local businesses, lunch was provid ed for the mentors to eat with their boys. Although the event ended around noon, some of the men stayed through the remainder of the School day. The day was truly a suc cessful event. The men have stated that this type of occa sion must continue to happen. In response to the requests, the school will be planning anoth er event for the men in late April or early May. This event, which will take place on a Saturday, proposes additional workshops for the men, more teambuilding activities, hair cuts, a basketball game and much more. More mentors and addi tional support are needed for this project. If you are interest ed in becoming a mentor, a vol unteer, or sponsor, contact James L. Dunbar at 336-703 6731 or by e-mail at jldun bar@ wsfcs .kl2.nc.us.
