Ms. Austin was born in Winston Salem, N.C. to Dossie and Annie Mumford. She was a member of N?w Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church and was a retiree of Lucent Technology. CALDWELL On Monday, May 18 early in the morning, God dispatched His angel to carry His faithful servant to her final rest. Mrs. Josephine Amos Caldwell was born in Forsyth County on October 5, 1928. She attended the local schools including Carver High School, and the Adult Basic Education Class at Forsyth Technical C o m muni t y College. Sister Caldwell or "Ma" as she was affec tionately called was a true warrior in God's army. She joined Union Chapel Baptist Church as a young girl under the pastorate of her uncle. Reverend Wilbur P. Clark. She had true com passion for others, and her mis sionary work had no boundaries when helping others in carrying out God's work. She taught Sunday school, was past president and member of the Usher Board. She was president of the Senior Missionary Department for 17 years. She was a faithful member of the Forsyth County Missionary Union and active in the Women's Baptist State Convention. She sponsored Table #2 at the Forsyth County Annual Missionary Tea for over forty years. In November 2008 they honored her for fifty plus years of service. She was the featured speaker at the United Cornerstone Quarterly . Prayer Breakfast, and was the Women's Day speaker at Union Chapel. Her parents, Dillard and Sarah Lue Amos; two brothers Samuel and David Amos; and two sisters Sarah Ephraim and Katherine Amos predeceased her. She leaves to celebrate and cherish her life her husband of 53 years Samuel Caldwell: her son. Artie (Saundra) Amos; her daugh ter, Delphine Jones; one grand daughter, Pridgen "PJ" Amos; one grandson. Samuel "Big Boy" Jones; a daughter she raised, Sandra (Michael) Popick of Powder Springs, G.A;. a brother. William D. Amos of New York, N.Y.; four sisters, Viola Ward. Carolyn Amos, Gwendolyn (Willie) Cole all of Winston Salem, N.C. and Barbara A McRae of Baltimore, M.D.; two sisters-in law, Magdalene Moultrie and Fannie Gibson of Summerton. S.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. A celebration of her life was held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2009 from the Union Chapel Baptist Church. Pastor Konnie G. Mrs, Joan" Greenwood Cardwell quietly slipped away in comfort and peace. Mrs. Cardwell was born on January 1.1936, to the late Fronia Elizabeth Millner Greenwood and the late Joseph Jackson Greenwood, in Winsion 5akm, N.C. She was the eldest of six children. On August 21 .1962, Joan married Charles A. Cardwell, Jr., her devoted husband of forty eight years. Joan and Charles had twin daughters, Charlita and Chareba. Though Joan is an accom plished woman in her own right, she wa.s most proud of her daughters. Her pride in her daughters was evident to all who met her and her greatest ambitions were not for herself, but for her daughters and grandchildren. Brandon and Bailey. Joan consid ered motherhood a divine gift, embraced it with gusro and set out to secure every opportunity for her children, even when doing so required great sacrifice. Joan also had high hopes and great expecta tions of the students of Carver High School where she worked for over thirty years. Not only did Joan nurture students' desires and dreams, she also provided a steady hand and encouraged them to adopt a high standard of excel lence for themselves. Through her kindheartedness. care, concern, good deeds, high style and special way of doing things. Joan became an institution within an institution. Joan was very passionate about style and fashion. She was even more passionate about education and voting as the means to elevate both one's individual position as well as that of entire communities. She was a social visionary and sel dom viewed the world in pedestri an terms or accepted the status quo. Joan tirelessly gave of herself to countless organizations, includ ing the Winston-Salem Urban League Guild; National Council of Negro Women. Inc.; National Women of Achievement, Inc.; Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc.; Black Political Action League; Friends of the Library; National Black Theatre Festival; Ruth Missionary Group; Women's Progressive Club; Society for the Study of Afro-American History in Winston-Salem. Forsyth County, Inc.; American Lung Association of NC. Northwestern Region; A. Philip Randolph Institute; League of Women Voters of W-S/Forsyth County and Ebony Fashion Fair. She was a Forsyth County Precinct Chairman, served on the Forsyth County Democratic Executive Committee and was honored as the 2006 Forsyth County Democratic Woman of the Year. In 1979, she became the first woman appointed to the Forsyth County Board of Elections and later became the longest-standing Chair of that Board. She was horn on September 27, 1928 in Caswell County to Maude Eva Bigelow. Bessie attended the local school system and graduated from Caswell County High School. Bessie also attended Winston Salem Teacher's College, Forsyth Technical Community College, and LaMae Beauty College. Bessie was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church for 50 years. There she worked with a v ariety of clubs and functions. Bessie was also a mem ber of Meridian Chapter H 308 Order of the Eastern Star, where she was a Worthy Matron from 1994-1996.
