BY LAY1.A FARMER THE CHRONICLE Ashley IB Magnet School fifth-graders ended their ele mentary school years in style last week with a swanky for mal affair at a city hot spot. After taking part in a special etiquette session, the kids dressed to the nines for a luncheon held in their honor at the Piedmont Club, which over looks the city from its perch atop the BB&T high-rise downtown. The luncheon has been a tradition at Ashley since Principal Brenda Butler took the helm 10 years ago. In addition to being a nice out ing. participating in the event provides an opportunity for growth. Butler said. "It's so exciting to expose the children to this," she com mented. "There are so many worlds that they haven't yet explored." Rev. Richard Gray The program, which also is a middle school send-off for the students, always inspires an array of emotions for Butler, who has had some of the children since pre-kindergarten. "It's bittersweet; it's sad to see them go." she admitted. "It's like a mother bird letting her children fly. Hopefully, you've nurtured them, given them what they need for the next step. You don't want to let thenrgo, but you have to." Girls wore fancy dresses, while boys donned shirts and ties for the meal, which included a chicken concoction and every child's fantasy - a dessert table overrun with cakes and other sweets. Fifth-grader Erin Howard said she had never experienced anything quite like the luncheon. She marveled at the posh surroundings as she munched on her meal. "This is amazing.
