Bohannon's own mother is now 80 and her father died several years ago, so she knows how much of a gift life truly is. "It's really amazing," she said of long life. "It's such a blessing." Many guests complimented the Durrahs on their youthful appearances. "They look about 70," one woman said to another. Health problems have somewhat slowed Mr. Durrah in recent years, but Mrs. Durrah remains quite active in the community, friends say. Ray Bailey, the head of the John's Club (the community's neighborhood associa tion), says Mrs. Durrah is invaluable to him as the club's secretary. "Without her. I would not know what is going on," he said. Crowder recalled that Mrs. Durrah had more energy than her former students at a recent reunion at Gillespie-Selden. "She was up early every morning and ready to go," Crowder laughed. Bobby Durrah. the couple's son. planned the celebration with his cousin, Annette Scippio. Before leading a spirited version of "Happy Birthday," he thanked those who took time to drop by the event and praised the power and longevity of the many friend ships that his parents built over the last nine decades.
