She peacefully departed from this life* on July 15, 2009, after a long bat tle with cancer. Donice Maria Harber was born on Oct. 20, 1972, to Thomas and Stella Harbor. She was educated in the Forsyth County public Schools, graduating from Carver High School in 1991. She graduated from Fayetteville State University,' where she majored in. political science. In 1999. Donice grad uated frbm North Carolina Central University with a master's degree in public administration. While 111 graduate school, Donice began her career in public service working as a Legislative Intern at the North Carolina General Assembly under the guidance of the late Senator Jeanne Lucas. In Jan.2001 , Donice became the Director of Public Liaison Wor Lieutenant Governor Beverly Perdue. Following Perdue s election as governor. Donice was appointed as the Director of Faith & Citizens Outreach, the position in which she served until her health began to fail. Donice was a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Inc. In 2001, she joined the Knightdale-Wake Forest Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Inc., where she remained an active member until her depar ture. She was an active member in the Wendell Wake Chapter of the National Association tor the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). where she worked tire lessly to ensure that the voice ot the African American would always be heard. In addition to all of the afore mentioned organizations. Donice was a member ot the Health Workplace Initiative Advisory Board of the North Carolina Institute of Minority Economic Development and the North Carolina Community Development Initiative Board ot Directors. Donice Maria Harbor was a consis tent supporter for both the North Carolina Legislative Black Caucus and its Foundation. She had fought a valiant battle with breast cancer for the past 13 years. Bette was born in Chester, PA on April 22. 1928 and grew up in Sussex County, Delaware. She was predeceased by her eldest son, William Robert (Bob), in 1976 and her husband. William Boyd (Bill), in 1996. who she served as a dili gent caregiver during his eight years of Alzheimer's disease. She is survived by one son. Thomas C. James and wife, Marilyn, of Clemmons, two daughters, Joanne Walters and husband. Keith, of Advance, and Mary Clay tor and husband. Robin, of Roanoke VA, and eight grand children - Erin, Brandon, Keith Jr., Dylan, Rees, Mary Grace, Abby and Ross - who affectionate ly called her "Mumsey." Bette was a graduate of the University of Delaware where she majored in history and education and minored in music, and met her husband. Bill. She pursued her master's degree in history and political sci ence at Delaware while teaching in Selbyville and Newark, and she and Bill later moved to Winston Salem in 1952. She was a teacher for more than 30 years. Although Bette was a woman of small physical stature, she had a huge heart and a passion for serv ing others. She served tfie local PTAs as membership, public rela tions and hospitality chairman, as well as president. She was elected president of Forsyth County Association of Classroom Teachers in 1976. Having been an active member of the League of Women Voters of Forsyth County since the late 1950s, she continued her interests as voters' service, membership, program, and public relations chairman, then president. Later, Bette was elected to the state board of LWV as public relations and organization development chairs. She also ran for the North Carolina State House in 1982. Having been an active part of Get Out the Vote (GOTV) efforts for many candidates, she was twice elected 5th District Chairman of Democratic Women of North Carolina and was part of NCDW's state board. Bette became a member of the Forsyth County Senior Democrats in 1996. She was also a member of the Democratic Party State Executive Committee. She was appointed to the Senior Democrats Advisory Committee from NC to the DNC for the 2004 election cycle. She had served as 2nd Vice President of North Carolina Senior Democrats. President of Forsyth County Senior Democrats, 5th District Chairman of Democratic Women, and Precinct Chair of three precincts. One of the high lights of her political career was serving last August as a delegate to President Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. She was also very active at the local and state levels of the AARP Bette was an avid world travel er, hav ing toured and learned about cultures and history in virtually every part of the globe. She was a member of the Red Hats.Society (Poxy Ladies) and also the Blue Bird Cancer Survivor Group. The family extends its deepest appreciation for Bette 's care and family support given by the staff at Forsyth Medical Center 2nd Floor ICU and 8th Floor Palliative Care Unit the past several weeks. She fur thered here educa tion at Forsyth Tee h n i c a 1 G o m m u n i t y College, jvhere she obtained her LPN licenses in nursing and later obtained an associate degree in nursing as a Registered Nurse from Surry Community College. She was employed at WFU/Baptist Medical Center for more than 30 years and was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Shirley was pre ceded in death by her parents: her husband. Walter D. She passed away July 13, 2009. She was the last of 14 children of William H. Bailey and Emma Turner Bailey. After graduating from Walnut Cove Elementary School and Atkins High School, Mrs. Steele Lived in Winston Salem. N.C. for most of her adult life. She graduated from Winston Salem Teachers College, now Winston-Salem State University in 1941 with a degree in Elementary Education. She received her Master's Degree in Rural Education for NC A&T State University in 1951. She taught for 38 years in the Stokes County School system, ful filling her mission for educating the children, who like herself grew up in the rural farming communities that L surrounded Winston-Salem. She was most proud of the many years she spent as a teacher and the eight years she spent as Principal of Pinnacle Elementary School in Pinnacle. N.C. She also taught at London Elementary in Walnut Cove. N.C. and King Elementary at King, N.C., where she taught in the spe cial program for gifted and talent ed students. She was a member of Wentz Memorial Congregational United Church of Christ for more than 50 years, and served her church in various capacities in the Sunday school and on the Deaconess Board. In addition to her parents, her husband of 47 years E. LeRoy Steele, preceded her in death in 1989. She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter. Dr. Eleanor Steele Kay; a son-in-law. Mr. Leon D.
