Gone Too Soon Friends have fond memories of Donice Harbor BY LAYLA FARMER THE CHRONICLE Donice Harbor didn't have long in this world, but that doesn't mean she didn't make her mark. Harbor, 36, passed July IS after a battle with breast cancer. She spent her profes sional life working in the highest levels of state poli tics, most recently as Gov. Bev Perdue's director of Faith and Citizen's Outreach. Perdue was. aiqong the political heavy weights at Harbor's July 19 funeral at Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church. Harbor was born and raised in Winston-Salem, but she and fellow city native Donna Oldham did not meet until a little more than a decade ago, when they were both working at the General Assembly. Oldham was assisting her father, State Rep. Pete Oldham; and Harbor was working for the late Sen. Jeanne Lucas. The two "political junkies" bonded right away. "We loved politics and we loved the whole concept of community service and public service," Oldham said of her friend. "... (Harbor was) an advocate for young women of color, getting them educated and also getting them involved in the political process." After graduating from Carver High School, Harbor went on to Fayetteville State University, where she earned a political science degree. She also earned a master's in public adminis tration from N.C. Central University. She worked for Perdue for much of her career, beginning her tenure when Perdue was the lieutenant governor. In a blog posting on her Web site dated July Harbor 17, Perdue sang the praises of Harbor, whom she says she regarded as not only an employee, but as a "friend and confidant." "1 admired Donice as a leader, an advisor and a ded icated state employee, but I loved her because she was a good soul - an incredible woman who cared deeply for others and did everything with a passion and commit ment unmatched by anyone 1 know. During the 10 years we worked together, she became like a member of my family, and I never hesitated to turn to her when 1 needed guidance," Perdue wrote. "Donice lived her life with faith and with a wisdom, kindness and grace that made her truly special, to me, to her family, to her Delta sisters and to her col leagues. Her loss will be mourned by many, but we are all better for having known her." Avon Ruffin was one of Harbor's ninth-grade teach ers at Carver. Ruffin says she showed great promise even as a teen. "She was very conscien tious. She was a hard work er; she was very organized," Ruffin said of the young Harbor. "I felt ... because she was as conscientious as she was, that certainly there would be great things ahead for her." Even after Harbor gradu ated and left Carver, the two maintained contact. Ruffin says she was proud of what her former student was able to accomplish. "What i will remember most about Donice is her personality - she was a very kind and a very giving per son - and just the commit ment that she had to the things that she was involved in. She gave 150 percent to everything that she was involved in," Ruffin said. "It hurt me just to know that she was gone, because it felt like there was so much more she could have done, but then 1 think she accom plished much more ... than most young people do. She had a full life." Oldham said she too will miss her friend's sunny dis position. "She just had a spirit and a light about her that wa(s just incredible," she remarked. "...When you left Donice's company, you always felt better." Harbor was laid to rest at Piedmont . Memorial Gardens. She is survived by her mother, Stella Harbor; siblings Kerry Harbor (Christina) and Tonya Taylor; and her grandmoth er, Lucille Bradshaw. Her father - Thomas E. Harbor, a well-known mortician, pre ceded her in death. A memorial hgs been established in Harbor 's memory at her alma mater, Fayetteville State University. In the 1990s, researchers formulated and tested a diet targeted specifically for peo ple with hypertension, and this diet has been shown to work especially well in African Americans. This diet is known as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, or DASH, diet and has been recommended to help treat people with pre hypertension or Stage 1 hypertension. Moreover, it has been shown to be effec tive for use in people with later stages of hypertension in conjunction with medica tions. It is important to remember that it is CRITI CAL to discuss any diet you are interested in adopting with your healthcare provider, as not all diets are suitable for all people. What is the DASH diet? DASH is a carbohydrate rich eating plan that empha sizes fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products and involves reducing your satu rated fat, total fat and choles terol intake. The diet reduces the frequency with which people eat red meat, sweets, and added sugars. In this diet, 27 percent of calories are from fat, 55 percent from car bohydrates, and 18 percent from protein. This means that, if your doctor recom mends that you stick to a 2,000 calorie per day diet, DASH includes 7-8 servings of grains; 4-5 servings of. vegetables; 4-5 servings of fruits; 2-3 servings of fat-free or low-fat dairy; 2 or fewer servings of lean meats, poul try, or fish; 2-3 servings of fats and oils; 4-5 servings per week of nuts, seeds and legumes; and 5 or fewer serv ings per week of sweets. One form of the diet also decreas es sodium, which also helps lower blood pressure. It should be noted also that DASH is indicated for high blood pressure and not necessarily for losing weight. However, if you eat as healthfully as is recommend ed by the diet, chances are you will lose weight as well. This is especially true if you also increase your physical activity level. I'm interested! Where do I begin? Again, you should begin with a trip to your doctor's office. Only your healthcare provider can tell you whether DASH is an appropriate diet for you. Once you have approval from your physi cian, there is a lot of public information available to you regarding the DASH diet. If you have Internet access, you can go to the Web site for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to review their DASH materi als. They have a Web site especially dedicated to help ing people learn to follow DASH. That Web site address is http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/hb p/prevent/h_eating/h_eating. htm. On that site, you can download a free booklet called "Your Guide to Lowering Your Blood Pressure with DASH." This booklet explains the dangers of high blood pressure, describes serving sizes for fruits and vegetables, and provides cooking tips and actual recipes to help people prepare DASH-friendly meals. If you do not have Internet access, please feel free to call the Angelou Research Center toll-free at 1-877-530-1824, and we can help you obtain this informa tion. You can also find infor mation about DASH at your local bookstore; there are several cookbooks available that are dedicated specifical ly to this diet. - Contribution by Jaimie Hunter , MPH, CHES, Alain Bertoni, MD, MPH, and Melicia Whitt-Glover, PhD Do you need further information or have ques tions or comments about this article? We are particularly appalled at the way many of our veterans and members of active duty families have had to fare during this crisis." The - North Carolina announcement was held simultaneously with those in other states and even one in London, England. Members of the Industrial Areas Foundation - which includes Winston-Salem's CHANGE and similar grassroots organ izations throughout the state nnH nation that rpn resent 500,000 fam ilies - is the driving force behind the movement. IAF says the 10 percent cap is only part of its overall econom ic crisis campaign. Those in the movement say no more than 10 per cent interest should be applied to for credit carets purchases - and personal loans, including payday loans and rapid-return tax refunds. Rev. Womack "If ten percent is good enough for God. irshould be good enough for any bank, rr<?Hit rarH rnmna. ny or any other lender," said Rev. Lawrence Womack of the St. Martins Episcopal Church of Charlotte. 1AF has sent let ters requesting meetings with the CEOs of the nation's five largest credit card compa^ nies - Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, Wachovia/Wells Fargo, Citibank and Capital One - to discuss the issue.
