SportsWeek August 6, 2009 Atkins hires McCoy SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Michael V. McCoy has been hired by Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools as coach of Simon G. Atkins Academic and Technology High School girls' and boys' tennis teams. McCoy is looking for McCoy piayers for both teams and hopes to have the girls' team up and run ning by the first sched uled matcn on September 8, 2009, when the lady Camels will face High Point Andrews in High Point. McCoy will have try outs for players at all levels, from beginners to accomplished players starting from time of sign up, and asks that poten tial players not hesitate to try out; he is willing to work with students on their skills. McCoy played tennis in high school at Rocky Mount Sr. High in Rocky Mount, N.C. as well as at Winston Salem State University, where he will be inducted into the Winston-Salem State University Clarence "Big House" Gaines Athletic Hall of Fame next month for Meritorious Achievement on Sept. 4. McCoy is a certified United States Tennis Association Official and continues to compete com petitively with the Kimberly Park Tennis Club and in tournaments throughout the southeast, winning numer See McCoy on B 1 2 West trains to meet high standards BY TIM BULLARD THE CHRONICLE When the West Forsyth High School junior varsity football team hits the field to play ball this season, they will be in shape and ready to meet any chal lenger head-on. The school's entire coaching staff helps to coach JV sports. Brian Bowman is the JV head football coach. He has spent the off season getting his guys in shape. "Last year, the team was 7 3," he said. "We were blessed with athletes who would give all they could give. It's been going great. 1 think there were 30 to 40 freshmen who have been out." The team practices from 9 a.m. to noon. Conditioning is key in this Central Piedmont Conference. Davie and Mount Tabor will be challenging, according to the coach. "It keeps them in much bet ter shape and ready to go," he said. Photo by Tim Bullard Local team shines at national tourney SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The North Carolina Rising Stars, an 11 & Under AAU Basketball team from Winston-Salem, recently participated in the National Championship Tournament in Cocoa Beach, Fla. where they finished 9th in the country in Division II. The tournament, held July 26 - Aug. 1, showcased the talents of teams from across the country. The team got an additional treat when they met and posed for a picture with Charlotte Bobcats star Raymond Felton. who spent his collegiate career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The NC Rising Stars finished the tournament with a 5-2 record, defeating very good teams from New York. Kentucky, New Hampshire, Virginia and Texas. Their two losses were against teams from Houston, Texas and Lisle, Ind. The MABC Bengals of Boston were the National Division II Champions. The coaching staff for the NC Rising Stars consists of Head Coach Dominic Delph; and Assistant Coaches Arif Bilal. Tim Henry and Jarian Wallace. After the tournament. Coach Dominic said. To see submitted Photo the boys grow as a team ana ao wnat tney aia in cocoa See Stars on B 12 Action non-stop at Hang the Net SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The 19th Annual Celebrity Hang the Net and Slam Dunk Contest last week at Hanes Hosiery Recreation Center was a big success - drawing a crowd of more than 500 and some of the area's best known basketball players: The crowd was treated to local celebrities as well as stars on the nation al level, college all stars and living leg ends. Mike Copeland of the 2009 National Danny Harnden Champion North Carolina Tar Heels was there, as was Quentin Thomas of the 2005 National Champion North Carolina Tar Heels. Center Director Art Blevins started the event with the presentation of Living Legend Awards to t_oacn 10m Muse, a longtime Parkland High School coach who is now helping his son, Andy, at Mt. Tabor. Muse has been a coach for 50 years. Also recognized with the honor was Walter Faye, a former North Forsyth High School star who was All Conference, All-State and Player of the Year. He also coached the Carolina Hornets AAU team to a national cham pionship in the early 90s. Claudette Weston was the other awardee. She is a longtime Winston Salem State University and Wake Forest University supporter, and a civic leader and philanthropist who is always willing to lend a helping hand to the less fortu nate. She is an icon in the city and an inspiration to all.
