Local director/playwright bringing show back to stage SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The original musical comedy "Remus," written and directed by Flonnie Anderson, will return to the stage on Friday and Saturday (Aug. 14 and 15) at 7:30 p.m.. and on Sunday. Aug. 16 at 4:30 p.m. _ . The show is based -on the famed "Uncle Remus Tales" by son-of-the South author Joel Chandler Harris, who heard the tales as a boy. while listening to them with slave children. He record ed those stories when he became a man. The tales are taken from African folktales brought to the New World by slaves, who primarily settled in the Southeastern United States. Adult slaves both entertained and taught their children the valuable life lessons. Usually, each tale ended with a moral or lesson to be learned that reminded the children^ of the difference between right and wrolfgj The Men's Fellowship of Went/. Memorial United Church of Christ will present the performances, which will -be held at the church. 3435 Carver School Road. The Rev. Renee Griffin is the pastor at Wentz. The production is one of several in the repertoire of the Flonnie Anderson Theatrical Association (FATA), a quali ty community theater company founded by Flonnie Anderson in 1981. Players in the company represent a w ide cross section of talent in the community. "This production provides an oppor tunity for family fun." said Anderson. "It's a fun show with a series of serious messages that the young and not-so young can appreciate." The production is under the* musical direction of Dr. Connie McKoy. a mem ber of Went/ and the music faculty at UNCG School of Music. The produc tion features more than a dozen per formers. WSSU grad leads school supply drive SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE In an effort to help at least 100 children start the school year right. Travest Hunter, an adjunct professor at Forsyth Technical Community College and Winston-Salem State University, is spearheading what he is calling the "Community Back-to-School Giveaway" on Saturday, Aug. 22, from noon until 3:15 p.m. at the Carver High School parking lot. Under the theme "Armed and Dangerous," Hunter, a WSSU graduate, wants students to be armed with the tools they will need in school. "We want to outfit at least 100 children in grades K-12 with the supplies they will need for success in the coming school year." said Hunter, whose ultimate goal is to one day open his own school in the Kernersville community. "The drive is my way of giving back to the com munity." School supplies have been donat ed by corporations, individuals and -churches. Many of the ttems have been donated by members of the Hunter , board of directors of the Academy of Excellence Christian School, Inc., a non-profit organization founded by Hunter in 2008, Hunter said the mission of the school is, to provide a cut ting-edge and relevant education to preschool through high . school students in a Christian atmosphere that will enrich the spiritual, intellectual, physical, social and cultural devel , opment of children. - Hunter earned his Master of Religious Education at Shaw University School of Divinity, and his Ph.D. in School Administration at Capella University in Minneapolis.
