BB&T volunteers give students something to remember BY LAYLA FARMER THE CHRONICLE Volunteers from BB&T lent their time and talents to North Hills Elementary School this week. Employees of the Winston Salem-based bank have been busy this summer, doing good deeds for schools and nonprof it agencies throughout the more than a dozen states where BB&T has branches. Employees were given time and funding to contribute to "Lighthouse Projects" to improve local communities. "It's part of our mission statement to make the commu nity in which we live a better place to be," explained Jennifer Randall, a corporate - ? sports marketing analyst and event planning specialist for BB&T. . With the economy being the way it is, we felt like we really wanted to give back and help even more." More than 1 ,000 Lighthouse Projects have been undertaken so far. North Hills, a school off of Indiana Avenue . with a student population that is nearly all black and Hispanic, is the latest benefici ary. BB&T's Corporate Marketing Department has taken the school under its wing over the last several months Bank employees have served as volunteers in various capac ities; donated school supplies and uniforms to student; per formed landscaping work on school grounds; and assisted North Hills' faculty and staff with the monumental task of preparing for the first day of school. "BB&T and what they're trying to do is absolutely amazing in terms of the man hours that they've provided to the school and also the dona tions." said Assistant Principal Jeff Maglio. "We have a very small PTA that doesn't neces sarily have the resources to provide these things." This week, the BB&T vol unteers and North Hills stu dents and teachers collaborate ed on a project that will serve as a lasting tribute to the beau r Pfcuto* by Layla Farmer Cynthia Williams helps students place items on the lighthouse. Students admire the lighthouse. tiful partnership the bank and the school have shared this summer. On Monday, construction began on a large lighthouse monument with a mosaic cov ering that is made up of seashells and trinkets that pay homage to the state's rich his tory. Each student and teacher was asked to place one item on the lighthouse, whose black and white stripped exterior design mimics that of the Bodie Island LighthouseV Tara Muzzy, the school's visu al arts specialist, said the work that the BB&T employees have done at the school have benefitted students in more ways than one might imagine. "We're hoping that (the students) are going to see that when you work together and you get involved, you can make something really cool happen," Muzzy commented. .We want them to know that other people in the community care about them, and that's why BB&T's coming here and helping us with this project." BB&T Chief Corporate Communications Officer Cynthia Williams said she has enjoyed every bit of the time she has spent at North Hills, "1 think it's a wonderful opportunity to contribute something back to the kids and the community," Williams said. "...Their needs are over whelming, and it makes you sad to think that there are so many children right under our noses that need help, so I'm just humbled to to be able to do that." The BB&T Lighthouse Projects were slated to culmi nate Wednesday. HH&T volunteers pose next to the lighthouse.
