Lesson Scripture: Matthew 15:
21-28
Lesson Aims: To summarize
the account of the Canaanite
woman; to understand and accept
that He acts on His time not ours;
and to exhibit humility as we wit
ness for Him.
Background: Matthew present
ed sound evidence in the case of
Jesus' identity. According to this
disciple/apostle. Jesus the Christ, is
the fulfillment of prophecy.
Writing primarily to the Jews,
Matthew used their religious and
cultural backgrounds to prove that
Jesus is Messiah. First, His lineage
and the prophecies were shared.
Then, various types of evidence
was gathered to undergird
Matthew's claim. During the month
of February, we study individuals'
testimonies that supported
Matthew. We begin with a Gentile
woman who seeks healing for her
daughter.
Lesson: Mark 7:24-30 records
the same episode found in today's
In His Time
Mildred
Peppers
Sunday
School Lesson
lesson. After the rejection in
Nazareth, Jesus continues His min
istry. John the Baptist is beheaded
as Jesus feeds five thousand. He
walks on water and later begins His
discourse on clean and unclean
based on traditions after the
Babylonian exile. He leaves the
region (Galilee) for Phoenicia
(modern Lebanon). The two cities
mentioned are Tyre (TIGHR) and
Sidon (SIGH duhn) located
approximately 30 miles northwest
of Capernaum His withdrawal
from Galilee enables Him to teach
the disciples privately while avoid
ing the mounting opposition. Even
in this Gentile region, word has
reached them about the Jewish mir
acle worker. Matthew calls her a
Canaanite and Mark refers to her as
Syro-Phoenician. Nonetheless, she
has a problem - her daughter needs
healing. This Gentile addresses
Jesus as Lord and the Son of David.
Her approach to some degree is
deceiving: she isn't a part of the
covenant. Jesus ignores her. She
pleads her case to the disciples to
the point that they grow tired of
her. They ask Him to send her
away! His first harsh remarks are
found in verse 24. There seems to
be a contradiction here because in
chapter 8. He healed the centuri
on's servant. Maybe His response
is based on cultural prejudice. She
didn't give up in the face of rejec
tion! I can envision her falling on
her knees praising Him and asking
for His help. This image-, suggests
total humility - depending on His
grace and mercy alone. Jesus
brings out her faith by making a
derogatory statement She recog
nizes the insult, but instead of
anger, she points out that even the
dogs get the crumbs from the table.
"Her humility, determination, and
willingness to accept her place
touches Jesus" (UM1 Direction).
Messiah declares she has great
faith and honors her request.
Application: The woman's
daughter is healed! Do you think
