Grandmothers are known One of Virginia We iler's images. as "nyaiuas" in Swahili. The photo graphic canvas will be for sale to benefit The Nyanya Project. The exhibit will open on Wednesday. Ma> 5 at Simpl>ummy, 122 Reynolda Village, from 2:30-5:30 p.m Weiler and S\an>a Project Founder Mar> Martin Niepold will be on hand to talk about the project In Kenya alone, estimates suggest that more than one million orphans are being raised b\ these women, who are often widowed, have mini mal education and receive no government assistance. TNP does not give hand outs, rather. it trains grandmothers in various skills to provide ongoing care for themselves and their families. Weiler traveled to Kenya and Tanzania last summer with TNP and to Kenya and Rwanda this winter where she met do/ens of these grandmothers. 'What 1 witnessed while photographing these extraordi nary women - all without exception examples of dignity, strength, hard work and endurance - is a reminder of the nobility of the human spirit and the crucial need for commu nity and hope." She is the daughter of Amanda Walker of High Point. Theta Mu Sigma crowned this princess after her absolutely excep tional inspirational dance per formance. The other participants were: Sierra Samuels and Aireyona Sanders, who took second and third place, respectively. The Chapter also present ed information on two of the sorority's national programs: Buckle Up America, a seat-belt car-seat safety initiative, and Wee Savers, which focuses on making wise savings investments for children.
