Mack Sr. Scholarship Fund Day on March 13 at 10 a.m. Rev. Derwin Lamar Montgomery will he the guest speaker. Montgomery currently serves as the youth pastor at First Calvary Baptist Church and is the youngest mem ber of the Winston-Salem City Council. He represents the East Ward. Montgomery is the son of the Rev. David and Denise Montgomery of Hopkins, S.C. He accepted his call to ministry at the age of 15, when he preached his initial ser mon. He was licensed on June 5, 2005 at St. James Baptist Church in Hopkins, under the direction of Dr. James W. Abrams Jr. Montogomery was ordained in the Baptist tradition in October of 2010. Montgomery graduated from Winston-Salem State University in May 2010 with a degree in political science with a concentration in public administration. He served as president of the WSSU Chapter of the NAACP; a men tor for Family Services of Winston-Salem's RAP pro gram; and as the Community Action chair of the NC NAACP Youth & College Division. He was recognized for his community involvement by the City of Winston-Salem in January 2009, when he was one of the recipients of the inaugural MLK Young Dreamers Award. Montgomery is currently enrolled at Wake Forest University, where he is seeking a Master of Divinity degree with a concentration in religion and public policy. He is currently employed at Winston-Salem State University as a developmental analyst. Divinity School taking NC pastors to Israel SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICI.f{ From Bethlehem to Jerusalem, a group of 20 North Carolina ministers will have the opportunity to explore the Holy Land as part of Wake Forest University Divinity School's 201 1 Holy Land Pilgrimage and Macedonian Ministries program "Renewing Ministers! Revitalizing Congregations" (RMRC). Funded by a grant from the CF Foundation, the program is open to Triad-area ministers from all denominations and is intended to nur ture spirituality and reflection among mid career ministers (ages 35-55). "This program provides a distinctive oppor tunity tor clergy and congregational renewal.'" said Gail O'Day, dean of the Divinity School. "The CF Foundation is committing its resources to ensure that the spiritual lives of clergy are nurtured by experiencing firsthand the landscape where the stories of their faith O 'Day tradition were first shaped." The 201 1 program begins with a summer trip. July 27 to Aug. 10, to the Holy Land for a period of spiritual pilgrimage, prayer, and renewal. Upon their return, ministers will meet six times per year for a two-year program of peer support and continuing education. Group ses sions will explore new ideas and tools lor niin istry, including liturgical and educational resources, church growth, sustaining vital con gregations, and preaching excellence. A pre-trip orientation retreat and a post-trip reflection retreat are also part of the program. Bill Leonard, professor of church history, is the spiritual leader and pastoral mentor for the program. "This pilgrimage offers the participants an opportuni ty for serious reflection on the nature of ministry, as well as ways to nurture continuing spirituality by blending travel, solitude and community," Leonard said.
