Titus also joined Paul (not mentioned in Acts). As they journeyed, these two _ young men became the apos tle's troubleshooters. Very often, they were sent back to various churches (the peo ple. not the building) to teach and to correct and pre form tasks for Paul. As the Christian churches grew in number, so did the opposi tion. Paul sent Timothy back to Ephesus to establish order in the church. Ephesus was one of the fastest growing commercial centers in the Roman Empire. Located in Asia Minor (modern Turkey), the temple of Artemis (Diana), a fertility goddess, was nearby and drew many pilgrims annual ly. That cult was very influ ential. "The city was also known for its philosophers, artisans, historians, and rhetoricians" (The Oxford Companion to the Bible). According to Josephus (his torian), a Jewish community thrived there as well. The young church had to deal with all of those distrac tions. The epistle encour ages and instructs Timothy in his task. This new com munity had to be different or why would people desire a change? Last week we focused on worship; what it is. why and how it was to be done. Worship was/is based on sound doctrine (chapter I), love, thankfulness, and inclusiveness (chapter 2). Lesson: Paul is shaping the early church in this pas toral as he spells out the character traits for leader ship. We must not minimize the influence that leaders have on the followers. Therefore, the apostle tells Timothy to concentrate first m\ "who they are" instead of "what they do." The false teachers are corrupting the church (and us too). Paul's instructions to his "dear son" promote stability and give guidelines for the new community. Yes, we have to recognize culture, but we must always remember that God uses whomever He chooses (Deuteronomy 10:17 KJV). Let's not get sidetracked here! Paul specifically addresses the offices of bishop (elder, overseer, pastor) and dea con. Notice that education, material possessions and specific spiritual gifts are included in the standards. The qualities mentioned are parallel to the character of God. TJjere is no mention of perfection! To develop a new lifestyle, an inward transformation must occur. One has to be faithful in marriage (God's faithful ness). have self-control, not be a lover of material pos sessions, be respectful, gen tle, hospitable, a lover of good and well respected by nonbelievers. The passage also states that the bishop has to be calm, fair, unselfish and apt to teach. Novices are too easily fooled: they must mature first. Deacons pretty much follow the same criteria with the exception of teaching. Verse 1 1 implies that women served as deacons in the early church. Wonder how we missed that for so long? What does all of this mean? Church leaders represent God in the community by keeping His truths and car ing for the congregation. Application: Careful consideration for leadership is vital. This does not only apply to pastors and deacons but to all lay leaders as well. Leadership makes a big dif ference! The "church of the living God" is predicated on love, patience, forgiveness, peacefulness and faith. How can this be fulfilled if the leaders don't measure up? Formal education is neces sary but if individuals lack God's standards, that educa tion will mean nothing!! Now what about friend ships? That standard is not mentioned either. As Christians, we have an awe some responsibility to choose wisely. That also means that we must know God's requirements (go to Sunday School)! We, like Timothy, must pray and observe. If the church does n't look any different from the world, why would peo ple convert? Leaders set the example (don't worship them) but they are not per fect. The Bible Expositor and Illuminator puts it well: "Spiritual leaders must be qualified. God insists on it and the church depends on it."
